We made Winter a GIANT new house today, and she has already jumped out twice in the past couple of hours. We thought she wanted more room to run because she is bigger than we anticipated her getting, but I really don’t know what else to do! In the bottom corners that you can’t see she has a mirror (she would look at herself in it when she jumped out so I put it in the pen for her) and a little “cat pod” that she used to sit in, and now on since she grown too big. What can we do to make her happy in this new space?? She won’t play with toys except what you see in here. I have a webcam in the room, this is a shot of her new space (the guinea pig is in a separate pen if you can’t tell, they have always been neighbors). I can hear her trying to move the walls of the pen around right now upstairs, why doesn’t she like her new spot? It is 40 square feet, each panel is 2 feet long so it is 24 feet + 16 feet. She is 7 pounds.

ETA: She just jumped out for the third time! she is between the wall and the pen under the window, it’s hardly a foot wide and she keeps going there

It may just take her a while to get used to her new house, or your bun may need a home with a roof like mine so she won’t jump out! I guess some buns are curious.

Can you put a cardboard hidey-house in there for her? They tend to like to have one, preferably one with two door-openings so she has an escape-route.

I don’t think she hates her new space, but she can get out, and so she will get out. That’s rather the nature of things.

It’s a lovely space for her – but as bam says, once a bunny can get out, they will do everything to get out !!

I can’t really tell in the picture but the pen doesn’t look very high for the size of your bun. I estimate (on no scientific evidence whatsoever…. lol) a safe height should be a minimum of twice the stretched length of your bun… Mine is 110cm high and I have a French lop eared.

If the pen panels are moving when she tries to move them, then her determination to ‘escape’ will be stronger.
Can you fix them at all to the walls or part of heavy furnituer?
Or do as I do which is tie a heavy pack of 12 litres (6×2) of water on to them so they can’t be shifted.

If you can move the panels with the strength of two fingers (again, not scientifical !) then she will be able to easily with her gnashers!

Once she realises she can’t get out, she’ll try less.
For the minute you’ll have to cover the pen up (be careful she can’t reach the top – if she can it is WAY too low) maybe with material around the edges…?

It’s a case of “the grass is greener on the other side” – its NOT that she hates her new house… it’s that things always seem more interesting on the other side (ie where you are!!)

              PS – she is LOVELY.

I agree with adding a hidey house, while it may not solve her jumping out problem, it may help her be more comfortable.

YES !! Upside down carboard box with holes cut in two sides…. Zou can’t get enough of hers….. in out in out, carrying it around like a snail on her back (OK so one hole is slightly smaller than her big booty can manage !!)

Wow! Great set up. Bunny doesn’t know how good she has it!
