  Hi guys,
  
  So, my Dwarf Lionhead is roughly 6 years old. He has elongated roots on nearly every tooth, and the roots appear to have invaded the sinuses. He has always had chronic rhinitis, and about 3 weeks ago, he presented with excessive white mucus coming out of his nose. Suspecting pasteurella, I took him to the vet, who cultured him. He came back positive with a pseudomonas infection. He has been on Penicillin G for about 3 months, and the vet put him on Baytril and advised nebulizing him multiple times a day with saline. He is also on Ibuprofen to decrease the swelling in his nasal passages.
  
  He began to improve, and was eating more and more, and I decided to try decreasing his breathing treatments from 4 to 3 times per day. He seemed to regress horribly, having lots of white mucus and raising his head while breathing, and it took about 40 minutes of nebulization to clear him up. His appetite has since decreased, and we have pumped the treatments back up to at least 4. The vet prescribed amikacin, which I am giving 3 times per day. He had trouble again with only 3 treatments, so I am giving him saline treatments in between as needed.
  
  Has anyone else had experience with this bacteria and nebulization? I know it is hard to get rid of, but I am concerned about the progression then regression. Does anyone have tips, advice, or any experience with how long it takes? Has anyone else had experiences like that? I am a bit at a loss…Thank you for any and all help!

  Yes and Yes, George had mix of pseudomonas and staph. pseudonomas is really tough nut to crack. Luckily for George it clear up on his third round of oral antibiotics. However Staph and White snot is still a problem for George. I nebulize him twice a day with cipro and acetylcysteine (Mucomyst) it is more preventive since as soon as I take him off he gets congested.
  
  As you vet if you can add acetylcysteine to the nebulization it helps break up the snot and allow the antibiotics to fight the infection. Amikacin is great, but it cannot be used long term since I believe it can cause kidney disease with long term use, so you might need to rotate. If add acetylcysteine you might consider giving eye drops since my vet mention it can sting the eyes when nebulized, but it does no damage.
  
  It can take weeks months or even the rest of their lives.
  
  Nebulization is not so bad George will probably have to do it for the rest of his life since he is prone to infections.

  When you say it cleared up on George’s third round of antibiotics, what exactly do you mean? Are you referring to time, as in the third refill of the same drug? If so, how much time was that? Which oral antibiotics did you use?
  
  Did you experience any relapses or backwards progress with George? I am currently having issues getting him to eat, which he wasn’t having before. I feel like it has a lot to do with whether he can breathe, but I am worried nonetheless. He is eating mostly critical care, which I am now having to mix with baby food to get him to eat (didn’t have to do that before). If this is something that is going to take a while to treat, I am worried that he won’t be strong enough to fight it.

  He had been on antibiotics 3 times, the first two times after stopping it came back in a month the third time we switched to Zeniquin which cleared it up. The previous two times was Baytril and sulfa.p. These were all oral
  
  Yes last winter he relapsed and we started nebulizing him. It took many months before we found a nice steady state with him ,but he showed progress slowly.
  
  Definitely look into the Mucomyst it will help it drain.
