  Hi everyone, any advice anyone can give would be greatly appreciated, I am at my wits end!
  
  I have a house bunny, called Fluffy. She has always been healthy and happy until about 3 months ago when we noticed one of her eyes was very swollen and pussy. After several different types of antibiotics didn’t work, we had a culture swab taken which came back to say that she had an E-Coli infection in her eye. We have been given Baytril Injections and antibiotic eye drops, both of which should be reactive to the e-coli bacteria. Whilst we have seen and huge improvement using both of these, the eye is no longer swollen or sore looking, there is still a large amount of pus being excreted when pressure is applied to the tear duct/cheek. The vet seems to be at a loss of what to do now except continue with the drops and injections… can anybody suggest anything else that might help?

  There are 2 scenarios here:
  
  1. The problem originated in the eye and has since spread down into the tear duct.
  2. The problem originated in the sinuses and migrated up to the eye via the duct.
  
  Did the vet suggest flushing the tear duct? And has your bun had any other symptoms like sinus congestion, wheezing, sneezing, etc.? It might help you narrow things down.

  Hi, thank you for your reply! The eye drops are called clorogen. I forgot to say that the vet has been flushing the tear duct once a week since it all started, but by the next day the duct is filled with pus again. There hasn’t been any othere symptoms, when the eye was really bad she became quite lethargic and wasn’t eating very much but I think that was down to pain, since the swelling has gone down she is a lot more herself, eating and drinking fine, bouncing around and coming up for treats!

  I have not heard of using that, but it is on Medirabbit’s list of antibiotics. My vet prescribed tobramycin eye drops for Wooly, which seemed to work well for whatever he had. Did the vet do a sensitivity test? Or did they choose this one because it is wide-spectrum? I’m wondering if it isn’t time to try a different antibiotic if this one is proving ineffective. Once it’s migrating into the tear duct (and eventually the sinuses) it can be harder to get rid of.
