I am having trouble figuring out the right ratio of lettuce, greens, herbs and vegetables for my bunnies salad. I was wondering what I veryone else puts in their rabbits salad?
Depending on your bun buns weight 1kg(2lb) = 1 cup
Check this website for ratios

I normally give Penelope 2 and a half cups of veggies daily and consist of around 4-6 veggies and a small peice of fruit 2-3 times a week as they are high in sugar.
hope this helps ![]()
Mine varies depending on what I have at the time and what’s growing the garden, but I stick largely with leafy greens and a little bit of herbs.
Salad for two may include 2-3 leaves of lettuce, a handful of fresh grass, leaf of silverbeet/2-3 bok choy leaves, a bit of fennel, a couple of dandelion flowers and/or leaves, 1 or two calendula leaves, 3-4 sow thistle leaves (in season), a couple of small sprigs of herbs, a handful of endive.
Basically, lettuce and other large leafy greens tend to be in similar large proportions, in addition to fresh grass. Then herbs and flowers etc tend to be a much smaller component. I tend not to feed actual veggies such as carrot etc.
I never feed carrot, Bam’s tummy can’t cope with carrot.
I feed fennel, cilantro, mint, kale, parsley and dill, sometimes romaine lettuce. In the summer I give lots of fresh forage, but during winter Bam has to do with store-bought greens and dried summer forage (dandelion, ground elder, plantain, yarrow, grass, willow).
And I give fresh apple twigs. They are the big favorites.
At the moment my bunnies get 1 (large) romaine lettuce leaf each, a large handful of coriander split between them, a handful of rocket split between them and a little watercress (they’ve only just started watercress do I’m increasing it each day) I also give them a few pieces of dried chicory root along with it and I’m starting to give them their sunflower petals with their veggies rather than at bed time (at bedtime now they get a couple mint leaves as a treat)
Mine is just a bub so he doesn’t get fruit and vege yet – just herbs that the breeder had already started him on and I only do tiny amounts
I’m not sure yet if I’m going to do veges as such and fruit when he is older or if I’ll stick to the herbs ….
Anyhow mine had very small amounts of baby rocket leaves , dandelion, mint and parsley
Ok so it seems like most don’t feed the veggies like broccoli, peppers, celery and squashes? So it’s ok if I don’t include those or fruit everyday?
Green or red leaf lettuce. Sometimes I put some mint leaves, cilantro, and/or parsley to mix things up.
I get a CSA box every week, so Chester ends up having whatever greens he can eat from there. So, anything from bok choi, mustard greens, kale, carrot or radish tops, cilantro, parsley, mint… I just make sure I introduce anything new slowly. I supplement with a leaf of romaine and broccoli floret for every meal, because I know he likes them!
BunnyMunchkin, don’t feed fruit every day. They don’t really need fruit, it has too much sugar. Fruit is a treat. Most buns will love a slice of banana or apple, but it’s definitely not a must.
I give a floret of broccoli or two to my Bam now and then, but not regularly.
I agree, fruit is a treat only and I would treat capsicum the same, it certainly doesn’t need to be fed every day, or at all. I don’t feed broccoli at all as it has a tendency to cause gas which can lead to GI stasis, squash I see as being unnecessary when they’re having leafy greens, and celery I don’t feed mainly because I wouldn’t be feeding all of the stems to the buns, mainly the leaves, and I know for a fact that I wouldn’t end up using all the stems in cooking so it would just go to waste, so I’m better off buying greens that I will use all of.
I feed celery, but I always chop the stems up into centimeter pieces (about 1/2 inch), because the stalks have long treads.
None of my buns have ever wanted to have anything to do with squash/zucchini. It’s bunny safe but according to some buns (mine) an affront to bunny kind. Same with bell pepper. Bam did eat half a cherry tomato once though.
The way I measure my veggies for my bun bun is I feed two leaves of every type of vegetable. (I get three different types). The veggies vary depending on what I can get a hold of for that week. Here’s some just to name a couple: celery (chopped up into inch pieces), romaine lettuce, green leaf lettuce, red leaf lettuce, spinach, bok choy, kale, parsley (mostly as a treat, sorta just sprinkled around), cilantro, collard greens, chard (rainbow or green), and some other ones which I can not recall. For the portions, well I would say that herbs should be given more sparingly. Fruits and non leafy vegetables (carrots, celery, etc) can be given one to two tbs for every five pounds of bunny. For leafy veggies you should feed one cup for every two pounds of body weight.
Here’s a website where I got all this info and where there is more detail on all this information! ? http://rabbit.org/suggested-vegetables-and-fruits-for-a-rabbit-diet/
Thanks everyone! I was using the house rabbit society website for my ratios which recommends fruit and veg everyday so I am glad that I can leave those out and be ok. I have lots of different lettuces, collards, cilantro and also some herbal blend from small pet select that has Calendula, Chamomile, Dandelion Leaf, Dandelion Root, Elder Flower, Flaxseed Powder, Goldenrod, Hawthorn Leaf, Hibiscus Flower, Lavender, Milk Thistle Powder, Nettle, Oat Groats, Green Oat Tops, Plantain, Raspberry Leaf, Red Clover Flower, Rosehips, Rose Petals, Strawberry Leaf.
