› FORUM › DIET & CARE › What litter is the best?
My bunny and I have tried four different types of litter and none of them seem to work…
-carefresh (too expensive)
-feline pine (too dusty)
-sopresh paper based litter (didn’t realize it was scented, changed litter RIGHT AWAY)
-sopresh pine litter (too dusty)
I’m running out of options and next time I buy litter I really wanted to get it right… Could you guys name some of YOUR favorite brands or recommendations?
BTW if you use one of the litters I did not like that’s great! It worked for you and not for me. ?
Despite being costly, carefresh works great for me. I keep meaning to try wood stove pellets but my bunnies love the carefresh so I’m reluctant to change. It just hurts my wallet a little :p
LOL! That’s great… have you tried any other litter that you might wanna share your experience about?
We’ve been using the supermarket equivalent of feline pine, it does a great job of absorbing urine and odors. Haven’t had any problems with it being dusty.

Only other litter option I tried was straw which as you can imagine was a complete disaster!
Wood chips, that is good, I was advised to get it for Olly because he sneezes a lot, we do not like Carefresh.
Wood pellets are good because when Olly tinkles it absorbs the tinkle and does’t smell, it is also cheap and easy to empty out after.

Lol I tried Hay ![]()
I love Yesterday’s News. A bit pricey though but have zero issues with smell at my house.
I use Yesterday’s news. It’s not scented (at least the type I get isn’t scented), paper-based, and not dusty at all. Only problem is.. it looks like pellets and Lilo would accidentally eat it sometimes (but it is safe to eat, I ate some just to see if it tastes funny or full of chemical, just tasted like paper).
Thanks for all your advice! I’ll definitely try these out! BTW I’ve tried hay as well… I honestly hated it. LOL! Thanks again!
With Yesterday’s News, isn’t there different packs marketed for small animals? But it’s exactly the same as their cat one, just more expensive?
I use wood pellets. You can get big bags of these sold as horse stall bedding or accelerant-free wood stove pellets.
I only use a single layer in my big litter boxes, with a screen over the top. I scoop out the really soiled stuff and mix the rest that is left around. Then do a full box clean out when required.
If a rabbit is a tad fussy about wood pellets, you could try using a combo, putting a softer paper litter on the top.
I’ll definitely try to use wood pellets. The only thing is that I would have to order them on Amazon. Or do you know somewhere I can get it?
eBay?
I get Olly’s from a shop in the UK.
Yeah, I think I would prefer to use Amazon… I live in CA. Do you think Home Depot has wood stove pellets?
Yes, Jersey, the Yesterday’s News makes a smaller, softer variety for small pets but it’s quite a bit more expensive (and the regular type is already expensive!). We buy the regular unscented cat kind. My buns have no complaints. ![]()
Oops! I said feline pine but meant yesterday’s news!
Oh! That’s great! I’ll try the supermarket yesterday’s news as soon as I run out of te current litter. I also want to try Woodstove pellets or horsestall pellets. Thanks for the advice! You might also want to say what didn’t work for you ao I can learn from your experiences… ?
My shelter suggested I use wood pellets (the kind you use for a fire) you can get them from any hardware store, and they’re usually 5 dollars for a 40 pound bag. They’re really absorbent, and they’re supposed to be safe for bunny in case he or she eats some. I line 1st cut timothy hay on top of that and then the hay she prefers to eat – 2nd cut timothy.
Ok! Thanks for your advice!
I use esquisicat naturals, it’s a paper pellet like yesterday news
Thanks! I’ll try it out… ?
We started out with the paper pellet kind called fresh news, which was ok. I had issues with the fact I felt like it was hard to keep clean because you really can’t scoop it. I tried scooping 2 a day and doing a complete change every other day and it still seemed like it was not clean. We did try the wood stove pellets also, but I don’t think she liked the pine smell. She did not want to use it at all. So I seen some stuff called cat spot that is made from coconut husk I believe. I ordered it and when I first received it I didn’t think I was going to like it just by looking at it. I had it here for like 4 days and finally was fed up trying to keep the paper pellet stuff clean. It could totally just be my ocd in thinking it was not clean info! I tried it and I love it. I scoop the poops out in the morning and before bed and the pee you just stir up the litter and it like disappears. At first I did not like the thought of that either. There is absolutely no smell what so ever and very little tracking around her area. I do a complete change out 1 a week and it’s been working great. I was really surprised that I ended up liking it so much!
I buy Carefresh Complete bedding, the “Natural Paper Bedding” Kind. I think it does a pretty good job at keeping odor down. I’ve got a lionhead mix and it doesn’t stick to the more liony parts of her fur, which is a problem we’ve had with other paper beddings.
Here’s an amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/Carefresh-Complete-Pet-Bedding-Natural/dp/B00PBM6WHW/ref=pd_ys_c_rfy_rp_2619533011_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00PBM6WHW&pd_rd_r=XPQX3GT13TMMDZZKZDW0&pd_rd_w=OO5Ov&pd_rd_wg=Ii6wl&psc=1&refRID=TFWY8HJ0S1HYYW6V1E52
Thank you everyone! All these ideas are great! I’ll definitely try all these out!
I started off buying yesterday’s news. My daughter bought a different brand once. It’s so much more absorbent and you go through less of it but my bun doesn’t like it. I put it in his second litter box and he stopped using it. To get rid of it i had to buy yesterday’s news and mix them. I guess he’s picky. Both were unscented. The other brand just had a diffetent texture
