Hey! So if there is any fish experts than this would be helpful. I recently got a 20 gallon tank and im starting to cycle it. I was wondering if snails could start the amonia cycle. I dont wanna use fish because my dad doesnt understand how the amonia cycle works. but are snails ok to use? I started cycling just to get rid of tiny rocks and stuff today but tommorow im going to get the snails.

On the basis of my limited knowledge, I believe you can cycle with snails, however there is obviously still the risk of them passing away due to incorrect balance of ammonia etc. Some species of snail will also be more susceptible to this then others, so I’d suggest doing a bit of research on hardy snails, as opposed to ones that may drop dead at the slightest imbalance.

You can also cycle without fish, but I think it’s a somewhat more complicated process.

Thank you so much! Do you think apple snails would be good? Or mystery snails?
