I know there have been similar posts to this before, but it’s been a while, so maybe there are some new ideas!

My crazy little LeVar has recently developed an annoying habit of chewing on his litter box.  He’s done it here and there in the past, but never for very long, but lately it seems to be daily. He has plenty of other things to chew on in his pen, but he seems to really like this. Both my husband and I will clap or tap on his pen when we hear him doing this to get him to stop and he will for a couple minutes and then resume. It seems clear to me that he’s doing this for attention (because, you know, he hardly gets any ) because he knows one of us will come over when we hear him nibbling and he’ll get pets.  This morning, when I approached him as he was chewing, he looked up and saw me and even got into grooming position!  Any ideas to get him to stop and chew on something better for him? I’m concerned about him swallowing something he shouldn’t.

Offer him different kind of chew toys, and stop coming when he chews! Start coming in randomly when he’s not chewing it, or chewing something else instead. He’ll see it’s not doing anything and eventually stop. My bunny doesn’t chew on anything but fruit tree sticks and that cardboard toy with herbs. And curtains. And anything fabric. sigh

I think rabbits tend to gravitate toward chewing things that don’t move around a lot.

You could try anchor chew toys to something (like the pen walls) to make them more appealing.

You may have to get a litterbox with a rounded lip edge that is trickier to chew. Or, if the noise doesn’t bother you, sit the litterbox inside a plain wood box and he can chew on the edge of that instead.

Does he get plenty of hay?

Oh yes, he gets plenty of hay and has many chew toys. I do think it has something to do with the fact that it’s larger and doesn’t move around a lot. I recently added an oxbow hay bungalow and he loves that, but still chews the box when he wants. The noise doesn’t bother me, I just worry about him ingesting plastic. We’ve added some cut cardboard tubes around the edges and that seems to help a little.
