Hi Everybody!
Hope you’re all well.
I have never posted here but read often and have tried a number of the pieces of advice given to others in a similar situation. It’s not worked at all. I’ve now encoded to post to see if someone can help…
I have two rabbits, one male 29 weeks old (neutered for approx 12 weeks) and one female, 11 months (spayed for 7 months).
She is an absolute DREAM! I won’t dwell on her in this post but she has perfect litter habits, is affectionate, chilled out, she’s just easy to own! She’s like the previous rabbits I’ve had throughout my life so is may be why I have had a shock.
The rabbits are house rabbits, they had s little struggle getting bonded and are now seemingly fine. They’ve never fought since their bonding period, and the only thing I see sometimes is if the female thinks I have food, and thinks the male will get it first, she humps him. Otherwise, no dominance issues that I have witnessed.
Anyway, onto the issue.
Rusty, the male, is a nightmare. I mean he’s hilarious and I love him but he is like a split personality. I’m now 8 months pregnant and I can’t keep up with it. My boyfriend, who has never owned rabbit is just getting agitated but the whole thing.
I have tried EVERY method suggested in this forum and he just sprays urine everywhere. Non stop. Poos everywhere. Poos as he runs. Poos on us. Poo on the sofa. Poo outside his litter box. He sees off the sofa so it hits the floor, he has weed on me a couple of times (never a male), and he just spot wees all over the carpet.
It is making me so upset. I’m not usually so emotional so bear with me (!!) but I can hardly bend let alone keep up and the house just looks trashed every time he is let out. Here is what I’ve tried:
1. Their cage is two storey (he can follow litter guidelines within his cage by the way). It is in the middle of our living room, amd they are not free range at the moment due to his issues. I read advice to confine them to the cage for 2 days, then to slowly increase the space. I was only to increase the space if he could keep the co fined space clean.
I added a small puppy pen onto the edge and made it relatively small. After two days I let the, have space into the puppy pen and placed a litter tray in there. He used it and also pooed all around it, and weed. I kept cleaning it and picking the poos up and putting it into the box. He didn’t get any better after 10 days and in fact managed to jump over the top of the pen so that he was out in the living room (I have to say, he’s very intelligent – he’s managed to climb up my body like a cat while I was standing up!)
2.ive tried giving them the space and putting loads of litter boxes out everywhere with hay. He goes in it some of the time, and then just marks everywhere when he feels like it. It doesn’t matter if there is 1 or 6 boxes, he marks the carpet, me and furniture in the same way.
I put the poos in his litter box and the wet tissue with his urine into his box. Doesn’t help. I tell him NO and try and move him when he wee’s. He doesn’t care, just looks at me and does it slightly further away. They just drop out of his butt when he runs around!
He doesn’t seem to have any health problems at all, he is active, very interactive, eats and drinks well. I really feel he is doing it on purpose to be honest
if anyone could maybe suggest why he is getting no better after neutering and different methods, and possibly suggest something that would be great.
By the way, I know he isn’t perfect. The odd poo and the odd wee are not an issue to me, but the state he is creating, I just can’t bring a baby into and keep up this upkeep along with monitoring him. But I am ok with him doing a few random poos! I even had a midwife appointments at the house and she made a comment.
I know this is long, but I wanted to show that I’ve tried different approaches and done my research so that fit helps anyone if they can think of a next step.
Welcome! Sorry you are having such an ordeal with him. It is no fun at all.
I want to say it’s still due to hormones post neuter and more time is needed for those to deplete…but 3 months post neuter seems long enough.
How certain are you he was fully desexed? Was there any complications with his surgery.
How was your relationship with him prior to the pair bonding?
I wonder if he reacting to your hormones at all?
It’s odd, Ive usually found that it’s the girls that are somewhat stubborn marking. (And unneutered boys!!)

Thanks for the welcome!
I know it’s such a shame because I really love them, but it’s meaning that the female has to stay in her cage more because he keeps being confined. It’s not fair in any of us really and I want him to have space and be happy!
Now, I’m actually not sure about the neutering. They told me all went fine and that was the end of it… I’m wondering if I should get them to re look? Will it be obvious to them if they have a quick look? Or would he need to go under?
Prior to the op, he was just the same. I would say he was marked more poo wise, but the wee is about the same. He doesn’t spray anymore but marks all the time and that’s the worst bit. He was just as affectionate (he is very sweet, and gives lots of kisses). I would says he’s made a 20% improvement. I was pregnant before I bought him, so I can’t compare his behaviour in regards to my hormones etc. Our dog is acting totally different t so I’m sure he had noticed something.
I know, all the boys I’ve ever had have been so good and he is totally crazy!! He managed to climb about a foot up the Christmas tree today![]()
For the possible missed neuter, you should be able to tell pretty easily: does he still have his testicles? A quick look should be able to tell you. How did the vet do his neuter?
Does he mark all over their shared cage as well, or only the room that they are allowed to roam? What bonding sessions were held in the room they share?

I just laid him on his back to look – I can see no testicles (I’ve never looked before though) so I think that’s right? I don’t know, he just went in for the day – but I’m there with the dog tomorrow so I could ask for more detail if you think it’s relevant?
He doesn’t mark his shared cage (only the occasional poo) at all.
Bonding sessions were carried out in a mixture of rooms (they were quite a tricky pair to start with and I had to try different approaches but they did that room, bathroom and kitchen). The biggest scrap they had was in this room but that was 5 months ago now.
After I checked his testicles he hopped off me and weed right next to me – I feel it’s quite purposeful if that makes sense?
I would ask the vet how they did the neuter for your bunny, just to be sure. But if there are no testicles, its unlikely something went wrong. Rabbits do have another gland that creates hormones for them, so it might be worth getting a test done in the future to see if his glands are creating too many hormones too fast
How did they recover from that fight they had in the room? It sounds like your male doesnt feel like the room is shared, so hes leaving markings everywhere to prove the room is also his territory
Him peeing on or near you is his sign of claiming you as his. It could also be that he is a bit jealous and needs more attention

Oh yes, perfect sense. I had a rabbit who I swear was communicating with her purposeful peeing.
Mikey brings up a point I was also wondering, could he be wanting more attention? Im reminded of Binky Bunny’s rabbit Bailey which she mentions here:
https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/tabid/53/CategoryID/5/PID/940/Default.aspx (scroll down to Bailey the Persistant Marker)
Regarding the neuter, I was thinking if perhaps one of the testicles hadn’t descended, he may have had only one removed. But surely they would tell you that!!
For your own sanity, I would stick with the restricted access to the room by using the pen.
After that fight, I moved them to the kitchen and bonded them there until the end. I then re brought them in to the main room. I industrial cleaned the carpet with a machine and they’ve never fought since. Interestingly, it’s the female that mounts him when she believes there is food coming.
Would you put them back into a pen and start again? Or is he a lost cause?
I actually posted on another board that I also visit a load to read in and everybody said they should go outdoors after the cold is gone if he can’t sort it out,but I’ve never not had a rabbit in the house and I’m scared they’ll be unhappy.

So the vet said that if he had had an undescended testicle then it would be in his notes and there was nothing in there about that.
He’s just done it again, come straight out and within 2 minutes lifted his tail and sent it right down the sofa. I’ve out him away and had to leave our female out instead.
Attention wise…. He comes up for attention a lot, but he’s more nosey, so he doesn’t want petted but rather just to see what you’re up to. I sat in the floor earlier with them (while he urinated twice and pooed 28 times) and he was just the same. He didn’t want to sit by me like the female but rather patrol around….
So if you went back to restricted space, would you just out one litter box in that space and hope he figures it out?
I just wanted to update that for now I’ve put them back into the restricted space using the puppy pen. He is marking all over this space but I’m just continually putting back into one of his three litter trays. Hopefully if I stick to this for long enough he might stop!
Interestingly, I have NEVER seen the male mount the female. The female always mounts him in the presence of food so I assumed she was the boss. Anyway, yesterday I found him mounting her – I’m not to sure why – he did this 4 times in quick succession.
I’m wondering if they have t yet figured out who’s in charge yet and that might have something to do with the marking……?
