I’ve had 2 female bunnies that were given to me a few months ago by a friend who could no longer house them. They are approx. 1 year old right now. I believe one is a mini rex (“Curry”) and the other is a lionhead (“Nono”) and both get along tremendously well and have been together since before they were adopted by said friend. So, I got home from school today and noticed some tufts of fur around the cage, which I thought was odd considering it’s almost winter. Most of the tufts came from Nono, but there were a couple small tufts from Curry as well (you can tell from the fur color/texture). I began to worry so I started to examine Nono and found a couple of scabs on the right side of her body; I’m assuming this is where the fur tufts fell out from. I checked Curry as well, but couldn’t find anything on her. Both buns have been behaving completely normal around each other and don’t seem to be in any sort of pain. Nono has been itching the areas more frequently, but I’m not sure what to do to stop her and I’m afraid if I put medicine on her, she might eat it up. Both rabbits live indoors in one of those doggie X-pens so they have space to move about when I’m not home. They have plenty of hay and water and get fresh veggies/pellets twice a day.

I couldn’t figure out what was going on by searching online, and this is my first time raising rabbits so I’m kind of freaking out!! I plan on going to the vet asap, but thought maybe I could get some quicker answers here.

Here is a picture of one of said scabs, the pink is her skin I believe and the brown area feels like a hard scab.

It looks like Curry has nipped Nono. A scab like that is commonly seen after another bun has bit. You don’t have to put anything on it, just keep an eye. It’s looking good. What to watch out for is excessive swelling, redness, seepage, a pocket of pus forming under the scab. That’s not very likely, but it’s always good to keep an eye.

Fur tufts around the cage can be a result of fur-pulling. Buns do that when they have a scuffle.

Normal shedding can also occur at any time of the year in house bunnies.

Thanks for the quick reply, bam! I thought it might have been some kind of illness, so that definitely puts my mind at ease. That makes sense since Curry is much bigger than Nono (almost twice as heavy), so she would be the dominant rabbit. Is there anyway to prevent Curry from nipping her again? This is the first time this has happened and they’re both still behaving as if it never happened (still grooming each other and snuggling/sleeping on each other).

Also, I’m worried about Nono chewing/licking at these scabs. Should I attempt to stop her or put anything on it to keep her away?

The scabs look mostly healed so I wouldnt worry about her grooming at them or anything.

This happened some days ago, so it seems they had a falling out and resolved the issue, since they’re friends again now. Bunnies can be like that. It’s not a problem unless it gets out of hand and one of the buns get really bullied, or if they start to fight on a daily basis. Keep an eye on them.
