We got a gorgeous lionhead x dwarf bunny about 4 months ago called Prince Lennard Fluffybum (lenny for short) who was cute and cuddly. After having him for 3 weeks he went into gi status and we nearly lost him. We caught it very early and I had to force feed him for 48 hours before he twigged that if he ate for himself I’d leave him alone. Since then, he will let me stroke him when he’s out but won’t let me pick him up for a cuddle. Any advice?

He has quite a big cage and has an inside run which he loves running around. He likes to escape so we have put plastic chicken coop wire over the top of the run. Somehow….not a clue how…the last 2 nights he has been escaping. Stressing my OH out as lenny also likes to chew wires!!! He has loads of toys and a tunnel so I don’t think he’s bored but I don’t know what to do.

Please help!! Fanks in advance xx

What age is he? If he’s young he might just be maturing adgrowing through his destructive teenage years. Rabbits can be cuddly when they are young, but as they get older they stop wanting to be handled altogether. This might be the case with your bunny, in generall rabbits do not like to be picked up at all(they are prey animals, and being away from the ground makes them feel insecure)

You can give a rabbit all the toys in the world, but they will still want time outside of their enclosure to run around and investigate. (Think about being in your bedroom all day, you’d want to get out into the rest of the house at some point to explore/get a bit of stimulation) Try giving him his toys on rotation as well, so it’s like he’s always getting new toys, to try keep them interestin.

My pair figured out how to get out of their pen a while ago, and proceeded to do it as often as possible but when they got out they’d just go sleep on the couch-they just liked the idea of being out.

He’s just turned 6 months so he’s still a baby I guess. And he’s extremely curious.

I’ll change round his toys and try to keep his brain active and see how we get on. If not, I’ll be back on asking fro advice x

              Haha good luck!
Three different playpens, multiple heights and a year of owning them my pair continue to surprise me with their ability to find mischief

In terms of picking him up for a cuddle, don’t be offended, most rabbits are like that Being a prey animal they don’t like to be held as it’s like being grabbed by a predator. Some rabbits can get used to being picked up for grooming/putting into a carrier etc, but for the most part they don’t enjoy it. You’re better off sitting on the floor and petting/cuddling at their level
