        Hi all,

My bunny Duke (buck) is 7 months old and he was neutered at 3 months old. He has always had a little musky scent however it has recently gotten very strong. His anal scent glands are always clean and so is his bum and his pooping is normal. However I still can’t work out where the scent is coming from, or why.

Does anyone know if his raging hormones could be causing a strong musky scent? Or is it a medical issue that I just can’t find myself?

Before anyone calls me a bad bunny mum, I just want to point out that I am not bothered about the scent, I just want to make sure Duke is healthy. Thank you!

A strong scent is common in unneutered males, and this gets stronger when they age from baby to adult. My first question sounds a bit silly, but I have to ask: can you be sure that he was neutered? Is there documentation, or did you bring him to the vet yourself for this procedure? Many pets are falsely sold as “neutered”, and 3 months is still quite young for a rabbit to be neutered. The reason that I’m asking this is because a neutered rabbit wouldn’t have trouble with raging hormones. The hormones are made in the testicles, and they are removed during the procedure. After the neuter there can be some residual hormones, but those should be out of his system within 6 weeks.

I’ve had Duke since he was 2 months old and I took him to the vet myself to be neutered at 3 months old. From 7 weeks old his hormones had began raging! Humping, spraying, you name it and his balls dropped at 9 weeks old! So it was definitely the right time for him to be neutered.

Since the operation his hormones have definitely lessened but they definitely not out of his system yet. In fact I worry they’re increasing?! He is becoming more and more territorial, he constantly fights for dominance against Lady (female, 7 months old, spayed, bonded since they were babies), and he hates to be touched by me! This is why I thought hormones may be the cause of his scent getting stronger.

Could it all be age related rather than medical or hormonal?

Also Duke sniffs Lady’said bum A LOT which again makes me think his hormones are definitely not out of his system!
But I just don’t know if hormones can be a cause of a strong scent in neutered bunnies?

You mentioned hes sniffing another bunnys butt? If you have an unspayed/unneuttered rabbit (or any animal) in the house, it could be causing his hormones to act up despite being neutered himself

She is also spayed and they have been bonded since they were babies. There are no other pets in the flat.

The adrenal glands produce a little bit of testosterone in both males and females. I don’t know if that production of testosterone can increase. The strong scent suggests sth hormonal. In humans there are tumors that can produce sex hormones, not necessarily malignant tumors, but they are rare and I don’t know if rabbits can get them.

The sex hormones are of course not the only hormones a bunny produces. In spring, many bunnies, incl de-sexed bunnies, get hormonally aware due to the increase in amount of daylight that reaches the brain via the eye. But that would only apply this time of year if you are in the Southern Hemisphere.

The HRS has a (rather old) article about a super-sexy neutered male, Marshall, who had to be put on chemical castration drugs:

Could he just be growing up? Just because he’s neutered doesn’t mean he won’t go through a “teenage” phase. Is the smell continuous or do you notice it when you “do” something? If my Wooly is POed about something he will open his scent glands and/or spray.

Thanks bam, interesting. I live in the UK so it’s not a seasonal issue. Do you think I should get him checked by a vet? Sounds like it could be a medical issue?

LBJ10 – so is this behaviour for a bunny aged 7 months? They’re my first buns so I don’t know what to expect regarding different traits at different ages. You’re right though, I’ve noticed he does seem to spray more when he’s peed off at something (which is often lately) but there is a continous strong smell. If this were an age related thing, when would it start dying down do you think? Or could I do anything to help him?

Yes, 7 months old is within the normal range for reaching their teenage phase. It’s more toward the tail end though. Just because he was neutered doesn’t mean he won’t eventually feel rebellious as he approaches “adulthood” at around 1 year of age. Most rabbits experience some sort of behavioral change as they age, some more extreme than others, whether they are already spayed/neutered or not. It’s just the natural process of growing into their adult personality.

Now something could very well be going on in his little bunny mind that makes him feel the need to act territorial. Are his poops coated with a shiny substance too? Those are territorial marking poops if they are. Spraying when displeased about stuff can be linked to that or he could just be moody. Also, the “butt sniffing” could be him leading up to humping. This can also be related because if he is feeling territorial, he could also feel the need to reassert his dominance (assuming he is the boss in the relationship).

So based on what you have described here, I’d say what you’re witnessing is probably just him going through some growing pains. I’d say give him some time. If his glands are clean, then I wouldn’t be concerned in that department. This whole thing may just be something that will pass after awhile.

I agree with LBJ, he will have a teenage phase even if he’s neutered. I’d give it time too. The adrenal gland production of testosterone is normal, I want to stress that. And although it seems that rabbits can get adrenal tumors, that still seems rare.

My bunny Bam had a flare-up of obsessive (really obsessive, he was like a bun possessed) territorial marking a year after he was neutered, so I’ve seen that happen. It died down after a few weeks and it hasn’t returned after that. And he’s been healthy, this flare-up was 3 years ago.

If you don’t see a resolution with this, I would get him checked out. The only other thing I can think of is if he had an undescended testicle, though you would think the vets would have let you know if that was the case.

His anal scent glands are always clean and so is his bum and his pooping is normal. However I still can’t work out where the scent is coming from, or why.

Does the rest of his coat look good?

I’m glad to hear you all mostly think it is an age related issue rather than a medical one. Phew!

He is acting very territorial! His poops are all fine and healthy but he’s definitely trying to prove he’s the dominant bunny. Nothing at all has changed at home, except he’s getting older. I’ll just let them sort out the hierarchy themselves. Maybe then he’ll be happy knowing he’s the dominant one and will calm down with the scent?

He looks completely healthy otherwise. Thick shiny coat, always clean. Both of his testicle had descended at 9 weeks old. I guess I just have a bunny with naturally high testosterone!

Thanks for all your help everyone!

                                  Hormonal/dominant bunny perhaps.
As LBJ mentioned in her second reply, if you notice some of their regular poos look slightly shiny (as if they’ve been sprayed with oil almost) then these smell. Its the coating that smells. Long term desexed rabbits will still do this as a way of marking territory.
