Theo’s off on his bunny holidays with my in-laws for the next 4 days. It’s the first time that he’s left our care since we had him boarded at a specialist bunny boarder for 3 weeks while we were on holiday. This ‘specialist’ boarder overfed him grossly (2kg food over 3 weeks) and we thought we were gonna lose him after he had a bad bout of stasis when we came home (which I’m sure some of you lovely people who offered advice remember).
I’m so nervous about it
Ever since the first bad bout of stasis Theo’s had gas troubles every 2 weeks or so which requires simethicone, tummy massages, critical care and lots of love – something I know the in-laws won’t be able to do. I’ve bagged up his food for each day and left really detailed instructions – sent the simethicone and critical care with him just in case too. I’ve told them if he stops eating just to ring the vet – I’d rather have a pissed off vet for wasting their time if he is unwell than a very sick or even worse bunny.
I know I need to settle myself about this because he will have to be looked after by others occasionally. I’m just so worried.
I do sympathise, Theodorusrex. It´s only natural that you worry since you had that experience with that boarder from Hell. But your in-laws won’t feed him buckets of food and they are probably quite capable of taking him to the vet. Would Theo eat a leaf of lettuce (or a slice of apple f ex) with some simethicone on it? If he does your in-laws could give him that once a day just as a precaution since he has this tendency to get gassy.
Oooo good call bam – preventive trx that won’t do any harm….
Will the inlaws not give Theo lots of love….
or massages (cuddles) (cover (bunny’s) head with one hand, knead dough (tummy, or sides at least) with the other….
)
He’s going to be fine….. I bet they are more worried about having him, than you are about leaving him !! I know my parents were when my dog started to get really old…
Thanks for the reassurance, Bam & Vienna. Yeah I know he will be fine with the in-laws. I’d be much happier leaving him with my parents as he visits them at least once a month for the weekend (with me & my husband too) and Mum has had to help me medicate him with simethicone before and she’s able to lift him and handle him quite well. The reason Theo’s staying with the in-laws instead is really as a trial run as my husband and I are going to Prague with my parents next year and Theo will stay with them then.
We’re not out of the country this time at least – we can go to their house if it’s an absolute emergency. They just have no experience with rabbits and I kind of get the impression that they think rabbits are pointless pets. He won’t get out of his pen all weekend due to them being very house proud – which I know won’t kill him – but Theo is so spoiled that he’ll not be too happy about that! The pen we set up for him at the in-laws is large so he’ll be fine, grumpy, but fine! lol
I never thought about preventative simethicone but that’s such a good idea Bam! He hates it but I will see if he could be tricked into eating it voluntarily.
Vienna, I know they will be good to him and give him the care he needs but I’m not so sure about giving lots of love – they’re more dog people and don’t understand Theo’s personality or value. And I feel like Theo will only run from them if they tried to massage him. He generally will only let me touch his tummy, he won’t even let my husband do it (mammy’s boy lol). And yes you’re right, I think they are petrified about having him especially given his recent medical history!!
I think these 2 pictures sum up why I’m not worried about leaving him with my parents – ha! Lord of the Manor taking up the whole sofa and getting spoiled with pets sitting on my Dad’s knee ![]()

Those pix are just too adorable, T-Rex!
If you’re not so far away that you can’t get back ICE, it sounds like a really good trial-run.
Hahah! Yeah… poor Theo this time around
I think the preventive simethicone idea is brill! Although likely not necessary.
Do try to enjoy your holiday, though, bunny-mommy *hug*
Your dad and Theo look so happy together. Great photo.
I think the preventative Simethicone is brilliant too. He will be fine, I’m sure. It was also really smart to tell your inlaws to take Theo to the vet if anything seemed off. Which it won’t, but that is peace of mind for you and them.
Your Dad looks spookily like my cousin !! Which would make us cousins, but we can’t be because my cousin doesn’t have any children…
!! LOL ![]()
Theo….. how are things ?? ![]()
Thanks for checking in, Vienna
Theo is back home with us. He seems to have actually really enjoyed his time with the in-laws! I’ll be honest and say I did get up at 6am on Sunday morning to check on him at their house – all was well the only complaint was that there wasn’t any hay in his litter box which I rectified. He was allowed to have pretty much the entire run of their house, which I’m shocked about! and he was spoiled rotten by all accounts.
All in all it was a huge success – so comforting to know that that’s an option if we are ever going away again. Here he is chilling out in their living room – they sent this through on Saturday night which eased my nerves a lot!
Damn, he’s gorgeous! ![]()
He is shy-eye-neey !!!
Shiny coat = shiny health…. or something like that…. ![]()
He looks very happy =)
I’m glad it went so well!
Thanks all
such a relief. He looks a little chubby in that pic, I’m just gonna blame the floof![]()
Agreed. It’s the floof. ![]()
Aww, how cute. I’m glad it went well. It seems like he was given the royal treatment ![]()
