For the past 4 weeks Luna has had clear nasal discharge (predominantly on the left side of her nose) but is otherwise her normal self – no sneezing, same eating and restroom behavior, non-dusty hay bin/quarters. 12 days ago we went to the vet (same place we always go but her vet wasn’t in) who prescribed SMZ TMP. While a 10 day course improved Luna’s nasal discharge, it did so very very slightly. So we went back to the vet yesterday (saw her usual vet this time), who said it looked like Luna was starting to develop a small point on one of her back molars (is that the same thing as a molar spur?), but for now her teeth (and ears) otherwise looked okay, so she ordered a 2 week course of Baytril, which should be delivered soon.
So my question is has anyone (or should I say anybun
) who has used the oral liquid Baytril in the past seen side effects/adverse reactions that I should look for when Luna starts this antibiotic? Plus, she has already had a bout of stasis this year back in June, so should I also give her a probiotic when she starts the Baytril or only if she doesn’t react to the Baytril well? -
I am guessing he is referring to a molar spur when he says a point. HRS says “When cheek teeth are not wearing evenly, they form spurs or spikes that can lacerate the rabbit’s tongue, cheeks, and other soft mouth tissue.” So probably the same thing.
Baytril is generally considered one of the best antibiotics for use in bunnies, and I have used it in the past with no adverse effects. You should ask your vet about possible side effects, and do your own research on enrofloxacin (baytril). You can definitely use a probiotic if you want regardless if she reacts at all to the Baytril. Rabbits can build a resistance to any antibiotic, but a two week course is not likely to result in immunity.
