I’d like to give this type of litter a go, if it’s not too hard to get/ expensive in australia? Am I better off looking at, say, bunnings for stove pellets or at horsey pet places (if you know what i mean) for horse bedding pellets?

          Hi, welcome Alfreds minion!

They can be harder to find here in Australia as pellet stoves aren’t as common. But they are becoming more popular. I buy a horse bedding pellet called Proteq. It’s about $16 for a 15kg bag. I really like it. You can look them up and see if they stock somewhere local to you.

Some others are Ozpet which a lot of pet stores now carry. I wasn’t a fan tbh.

There is also one called Comfey Cat but I found it difficult to find where I live.

Thank you very much Jerseygirl, that was exactly what I wanted to know! There is a proteq stockist near me, I’ll be getting some soon.

I can second the recommendation for Proteq

I was using OzPet, like Jersey said a lot of pet stores carry it, but the longer I used it the more expensive it got. After using Proteq for a month or so I prefer it, the pellets dissolve better than they did with OzPet, which I find makes cleaning easier.

There’s a couple other brands, Heaven Scent, and another I can’t recall the name of. But horse stall pellets do tend to be cheaper, Proteq, Horse Mate and EquinePure. The only place I have found to buy wood stove pellets is BBQ’s galore. But I’m pretty sure they only stock it seasonally, you would have to double check. Otherwise you can buy in bulk direct from a supplier such as pellet heaters australia.

Thanks Azerane, that’s good to know.

I picked up a bag of Proteq today for $14. Certainly seems like it will end up cheaper than the paper pellets I’ve been getting from woollies. Hopefully Alfred will approve : )

If he’s not fussed on them, you could put some of the paper ones on top until he gets used to the wood ones. Hopefully he won’t care if the litter is different.

Yes, ta, good idea, I think i’ll combine them till i’m out of paper pellets. So far Alfred approves.

I’ve just started using wood pellets, instead of a tray full of newspaper and paper shreddings which until now was my preferred choice. (lighter, cheaper (free!) and looks cleaner, imo)

But now I’ve got two huge poopers, one mega wee’er and white paws (!) I thought I’d try wood pellets which are so many BB’ers favourites…
I’m not sure if I like them or not. Henry wees a lot – like, a hose full. And so the wood pellets just crumble within a few hours of them being in there.

And they are sooooo heavy !

And, being Henry, I’m pretty sure he digs and eats a few of them too… I’ll stick it out for a bit (I got 2x 15kg bags !!! LOL) and see if I can convert….
