It *could* be caused by shedding, and maybe a loose fur slipped into her nostril by accident. Until the vet, brush her very good. Make sure she eats and poops properly.

Since she is shedding a lot of fur right now, she is probably just molting. I would take her to the vet because I’ve read that runny bunny noses can be linked to something serious.

Is there a vaccine for pasteurella? That would be news to me. Good if there is. That being said, even with any vaccine there is always a very slim chance that the illness can still be caught.

Since it’s only in one nostril and not affecting other areas after so long, I would perhaps think there’s a different cause. Allergies I would think would cause both nostrils to run, she could have something caught up in her nose that is causing irritation and the running whether it be fur or hay. Another option is tooth issues, tooth roots can overgrow in rabbits and on the upper jaw that can often cause weeping eyes or runny noses. It’s good that you’re seeing a vet, hopefully they can give you some good insight and the runny nose can be cleared up with some simple meds.

Mari you described exactly what my bun is/was going through! Luna wasn’t sneezing or anything but one day I noticed some of the fur under her nose looked wet, but upon inspection the fur was hard. At first I thought it was just food that mixed with water and turned to a paste that she would clean off when she groomed herself. I didn’t think it was a respiratory infection because she wasn’t sneezing, she was acting/eating normal, and the ‘substance’ was only under one nostril. Well two weeks later I decided to double check with the vet because her nose hadn’t changed. The vet confirmed she had a mild respiratory infection and prescribed a 10 day antibiotic. We are on day 8 now and her nose is slighty better (hardly any thick clear nasal discharge but still a tiny bit of mucus) but if its not 100% normal by day 10, we are supposed to go back to the vet (at which time I will request a culture exam).

Azerane, there is a vaccin for pasteurella in the USA, BunnyVac.

Mari, you have gotten great tips. One nostril makes me too think of a localized blockage or a tooth-related problem of some sort, so have that checked out. Clear mucus doesn’t scream of pasteurella. And as Azerane says, allergies affect the whole nose.

It’s obviously mostly for breeders, so they keep referring to “your herd” all the time. But since this is a vaccine that could potentially be very useful for owners of pet rabbits, the info is interesting even if we don’t discuss breeding here on the BB forums.
