This has been mentioned before on the forums and many may be aware of this alternative, but I’ll post about it in case some are not.
When you have a rabbit (or any pet) on long term medications, or an expensive type or brand, it really can take a toll on your bank balance. You can actually ask your vet for just the prescription instead of buying meds then and there. Then you can shop around for a better price.
I recently did this for the first time. I was getting a whole bottle of Procaine Penicillin for my rabbit, instead of having to keep getting pre-drawn syringes from the vet. This penicillin is notorious for getting stuck in the needle and it’s better to shake a bottle, draw the dose and give right away. Pre drawn syringes are a real pain, in my experience. Anyway, the vet would have had to order a full bottle in for me anyway and it would have been around $50 or more. I found an online company with good reviews that did it for $13 ( a little more with P&H). The vet was happy to do a prescription for me to send them. By the way, some vets may charge a prescription fee.
This med isn’t terribly expensive and I would have been okay buying through the vet – but it was good to find that this online company was legitimate. Had they not been, I would have only lost around $20.
Anyway, this will be really useful for if I ever have a rabbit on long term pain meds, for example.
Bonus pics of Gooseman who is receiving the penicillin injections. Poor boy, Im not very good with giving them. I took these to try get a good view of his asymmetrical mouth but he was moving around a lot. Some days it is more pronounced then others.
