I used to purchase the Standlee compressed timothy bales off of Amazon, and I think Standlee also sells an Orchard Blend compressed bale as well. My bunnies loved the Standlee timothy hay. Then I purchased a 1st Cut Timothy hay bale from small pet select, and my bunnies prefered the Standlee bale over the 1st cut Small pet select bale, even though the Small Pet Select bale seemed to be higher quality. I ran out of the Standlee bale and purchased a local timothy bale from Tractor Supply Company. My bunny seems to eat this bale and the Small Pet Select bale equally. I think it all depends on your bunny and what he/she prefers as far as taste goes. Any hay besides alfalfa hay should be fine to eat. If you can find a Tractor Supply Company or any other company that sells bales near you it will be much cheaper because you don’t need to pay the extra $35+ per bale for shipping. A lot of places say “Free Shipping” but really they just add that cost into the overall price. The bale I got from TSC was only $8 and some change. The compressed Standlee bales at TSC were $18, but online they are $50.

Of course when ordering hay online there is always the chance they may send you a bad bale that has nasty things like insects or mold in it, so check it for those things before feeding.

I get most of my hay and pellets from Drs. Foster and Smith. They carry the brands that I like – Oxbow and American Pet Diner, plus other brands. Their prices are good, the Oxbow products are always cheaper there than they are at Pet Smart, and they have frequent sales, which lower the prices even more. Lately, they have offered free shipping when you buy at least $19 worth of products. It used to be that you had to buy $49 worth to get free shipping. I live near a food and grain store that sells bales of oat, timothy, alfalfa, orchard grass for horse owners.  I think a 100 pound bale of hay costs a little over $20!!!!!   A flake of hay costs #5.  How many flakes in a bale?  I’ve heard several estimates….ranging from 10 to 15.  Obviously buying a bale of hay would be a fantastic bargain.  However, it’s a 100 pounds.  And even if I got it home, I’d need a cool dry place to store it…I don’t have such a space.  Don’t really understand why, but the food and grain store says that city regulations will not allow them to deliver a bale of hay.   There is a nearby residential area that is zoned for horses ($$$$$$ very expensive residential area) and they can deliver there, not to my middle class neighborhood which is not zoned for horses. 

I like Drs. Fosters and Smith too.

I buy my hay at the pet store (Oxbow), but anything else I’ve bought from the Drs. S and F site has been high quality and reasonably priced.

I personally like the small pet select hay. I wish I could by cheap farm hay, but where I live it is super dry and all the bales are brown. I find that small pet select has good prices and quality, and they have free 2 day shipping, which is good if you’re like me and don’t realize that you are almost out of hay until there is barely any left (although, like VivaLaBunz said, part of the hay price is probably shipping).

I get Oxbow and Small Pet Select 2nd cut. Although.. Dorothy has been rejecting Oxbow’s timothy hay lately. She will eat their oat and botanical hay though.
