As some of you know, Kuro suffers from permanent eye discharge on one eye, so he needs to be cleaned often from those milky tears.
I do my best to be gentle but I’ve started noticing how near the point where the tears come from (eeee English fail!! Help! lol) the fur is not growing. There’s like a tiny tiny bald spot that he doesn’t have under his other eye, so it must be from the area being constantly bothered. It’s not inflamed or damaged, just bald.I wonder if there are natural ointments I could use to protect that spot? Mostly so he’ll stop looking like a meth addict when he wakes up, he’s very fashion-sensitive

I like linguistic talk I hadn’t thought about olive oil, I’m gonna try to massage some on him and see if he approves!
Basically, my deluxe vinegar treatment (approved by the little Lord) is: mix 2/3 warm water and 1/3 white vinegar in a bowl, damp a microfiber cloth in the mix, squeeze excess until the cloth is barely wet and then get comfy somewhere with the bun and massage his fur in all directions. After that I make sure he’s dry by massaging him again with a dry microfiber cloth, then I brush him. It removes dead hair, cleans the fur, makes it shiny and soft and the rat will feel fab!
(works on humans as well!)EDIT: of course I won’t even get near his face or his ears… but the look on his face when I do the back of his head and chest is priceless. He’s like “oh yeah, slave, clean me MORE!!!”

So, update time. He liked the oil on his patch. Since I was at it, I rubbed some under his front paws where he sometimes suffers from sore hocks and massaged his nails too. He didn’t mind it at all, he’s not licking himself obsessively like when I had to give him Hypafix rubs.

My Bindi has chronic runny eyes. I wash the wet fur every night with a saline solution, dry well and then dab on a tiny drop of ointment my vet gave me called Maxitrol. It protects the skin. I remember it being quite expensive (like $30 some for a tiny tube) but it’s lasted over a year and Bindi gets redness on the bald corner of his eyes sometimes but with this ointment, we’ve never had any sores or cracked skin. Might want to ask your vet about it.I asked in my thread about Patton’s eye before I read this. Take a look at this picture and can you tell me if that Maxitrol might work for Patton’s eye/skin? Or if saline solution would work? He’s only closing his eye here because he’s relaxed. Not because of swelling. And I rubbed the fur away a bit so the camera could see better.

Obviously I have no first-hand experience, but reading the medicine’s booklet it says that it’s antibiotics + dexamethasone. Theoretically it will help cause cortisone can fix about anything, but since it’s powerful stuff, a vet must express their opinion on the matter according to the bun’s health status. I am going to ask before using it as well
