When I got my newest rabbit the rescue had named her Nala. But I wish when I got her I would’ve changed it to phoebe. Is it bad to change it now?
She may get very confused when you call her name because most bunnies can recognize their name.
When I got Kyra (my French rainbow dog), she was already 2 yrs old and her name was “Fanny” – do I need to say more?! LOL ![]()
As I return a lot to England I was NOT going to call out that in the park when she was running after squirrels!!!
So yes, I think it’s fine ! As long as you’ve got a treat in your hand (and that silly voice we all use to call our pets!) they’ll still come !! She’ll take a little while to know it’s her “name” but it’ll be fine ! ![]()
I think it depends on how long the rabbit has had the name and how often it’s used. Ava was named S’mores in her old home but they never paid much attention to her, so I felt like it was okay to change it. We had to rename Mordecai since we had no idea what his name was (we found him in our yard).
I have had her for about a month and will usually call her baby girl
Try calling her Baby Girl Phoebe until she gets used to the name change. She’ll recognize the familiar baby girl and come to associate Phoebe with your voice and attention, as well.
She does look like a Phoebe. I love the name Nala, but I think Phoebe fits better too.
I didn’t know if Odette would be Odette, Violet, or Binoche. I wanted Violet, but she responded to Odette. Sometimes they choose ![]()
I changed all three of my current rabbits names after I got them.
The lion head was named Lacey and I changed it to Nala (Mainly because my sister’s name is Lacy, and we have a dog named Lucy, and it’s already confusing enough.) and the black one was named Lily, and I changed it to Duchess. And my Rex was called Bunbuns by my friend while she fostered him and we changed his name to Clarke. Heck, even my first rabbit was called Honeybun for half a year until we found out that she was actually a he and I felt he needed a more masculine name and renamed him to Simba. I don’t feel like it’s really all that bad, it’s done all the time. They’ll get used to the new name after awhile, especially if you use it a lot. ![]()

I love fluffles! ![]()
Yay! Bonus pics, Thanks Bunny Daddy. They are an adorable trio!
@Moothebun, I think Phoebe and Baby have such similar sounds, she’ll probably ajust well if she is accustomed to hearing Baby Girl. I tend to use terms of endearment much more then my actual rabbits names. I think they do pick up on tone more then actual words also.

Lol ! In another era it would have been totally acceptable, often being a girls name.
One could have so much fun with dog names at the moment. Just name it after a rare pokemon. Call your dog back in the park and watch all the people that seem distracted on their smartphones come running. ![]()
I changed Theo’s name when we adopted him – he was called Sir Jumpsalot by the previous owner! I felt he suited a posh old man name much better
When we took him to the vet the first time, it was the vet he was previously registered with and the receptionist was like ‘thank goodness you changed his name!’ lol!
Yes. All Stephanies tend to be now shortened just to Steph….. !!!
One of the scrummiest tea shops in Surrey, England is Fanny’s Farm !!
(Fanny passed away last year. Very sad)
I have changed some of my bunnies names, and some didn’t have names. The last two times I changed names for bunnies I had gotten at the shelter, I chose names that had a similar sound to theirs, just in case it made a difference. Luna became Hannah and Cinnamon became Higgins. The rabbit I had adopted prior to that just had a number at the shelter, so I had no idea what his name had been. I did keep the name of one other rabbit we adopted from a shelter. Another rabbit that we had in the past, was found out on the street, so of course we didn’t know her name. And I adopted a rabbit from a family who no longer wanted him. He was an American Fuzzy Lop named Floppy. We wanted to give him a more distinctive name and his profile made him look like a buffalo, so we named him Buffalo. The other 3 rabbits I had in the (distant) past, I got as babies, so they never had names previously.
That’s cute! A fluffy little Buffalo!
@Theodorusrex, one of my rabbits was Sir Hopsalot before he came to me, aged 2.
Chito has always been Chito, but he has a LOT of nicknames and I think he’s super confused of what his name actually is :”)
I think I should dedicate a week or so to exclusively call him with his real name so he knows what it is.
I find that the surest way to get Chewie to come to me is to call out BANANA ![]()

same here! my bunny knows he’s Mizu, but i got cuteness-high sometimes and call him so many names.. however i still believe he perceives such name-load just as a background noise
