My 1 year old Flemish, Grimm, somehow got a broken leg on Tuesday night. He is a free range house rabbit with no larger pets, no children, and no guests in the house. I can only guess that he got scared (there was a heavy thunderstorm that night) and ran into something at top speed. I have never seen him do that before but I have no other theories.

I took him to the vet, they took an Xray, and the leg is unfixable. He broke his femur high up, both breaking off the ball that goes into the hip joint, and also splitting the remaining bone lengthwise.

Our options are amputation or euthanasia. We opted for amputation. The vet explained that there may be complications both during the surgery and after that threaten his life or quality of life. I take him to a university teaching hospital, so they have cold laser treatments, acupuncture, and physical therapy to offer post surgery.

His surgery is scheduled for Monday. We have anti-inflammatory and pain meds for the weekend. They gave us a mix called “critical care” to crush and mix the pills into. He doesn’t seem to care for that at all. I tried a crushed pill in mushed banana, but he is not going after that either.

I got enough banana into him that I know he got SOME food.water.meds, so I will just keep at it through the day. He also has his hay, pellets, cilantro, apple, and brussel sprouts in the enclosure with him. He was eating fine up until this morning. He just seems to want to cuddle and nothing else.

Does anyone have any input/guidance for the next weekend?

Does anyone have a three legged rabbit? I would love to touch base with someone who has been through this.

Welcome ! Oh dear poor poor Grimm and poor you. I’m afraid I have no advice for you (but others will – bam, Jersey? )

He could have done a strange binky jump. (I know of a friend’s dog who landed strangely after a ball was thrown for her and fractured her leg)

It is of course CRITICAL that he eats (anything!) and that his digestive system remains functioning at ALL times, or you will have another serious problem on your hands (GI stasis). You may have to syringe it into his mouth in a bunny burrito if necessary (wrapped in a towel) but be careful of his leg.

Keep an eye on his poop too. (He should poop regularly).

Good luck and keep in touch.

Ouch! Did your vet give you pain meds? If not – I would be calling back ASAP. If you have ever broken a bone, it is horrible pain. Pain alone will cause him to stop eating. I am currently syringe feeding my paralyzed bunny critical care. Get a packet of benebac as well. The directions are on the package. Get a puppy syringe, and add the benebac to the critical care. Benebac is a really god probiotic. Since he probably won’t be eating his cecum poops at the moment, he’ll need extra probiotic support. Aside from critical care – if he isn’t drinking water, syringe feed water as well. I think a 3-legged bunny would have a much better quality of life than a paralyzed bunny… Did the vet give you an idea of what complications to expect? So sorry to hear. What a terrible injury.

I agree with the others. Make sure he eats. Critical Care is good stuff but most buns will have to be syringe-fed it. A probiotic like benebac is good too, and Metacam for pain.
Many people have three-legged buns. You can check out the website disabled bunnies for info and tips. I can’t link to it from my phone, but you’ll find it with Google.
Poor little bunny. Cuddle with him if he wants that of course.

Poor baby. {{{Grimm}}} Sounds like a bad break. Rabbits have delicate skeletons but some powerful muscles. I believe Flemish Giants can be prone to some skeletal issues too.

It’s a shame they didn’t give you liquid meds.
Is he eating any of his normal food? If he is, then you could probably crush the pills and mix with a little water and syringe that into his mouth. Maybe have a little some fruit purée in a separate syringe as a chaser.
if he’s not eating on his own, you’ll have to persist with the critical care so he has something in his stomach before those meds. Some people find making the mixture more watery helps.

Keep an eye on his temperature. If you know what his ears normally feel like, use them as a guide. If they get very cold, you may then need to check his rectal temperature. Do you have a suitable thermometer?

If he’s becoming hypothermic at any point, get him on a heat pad and return to the vet.

We have a member here whose rabbit broke her leg twice! She didn’t need cast or anything and seemed to cope really well during recovery. It was so surprising. I hope your boy copes just as well.

Definitely looking disable rabbit groups bam mentioned. There used to be a yahoo group years ago. I do not know if it’s still active. There is also this Facebook group: http://facebook.com/groups/201759429869484

If my link does not work, just search “Disabled Rabbits” on Facebook.
I’m sure they’ll be able to advise on things like getting a cart made, physical therapy, managing hygiene if he needs that etc.
Sending some successful surgery {{{vibes}}} in advance. Please do keep us updated on how he is doing.

                  Thanks so much!!

                  Some quick responses:

                  – I finally got him to eat some kale this morning, so I am feeling better about things.

                  – he is totally not into the critical care or the mashed banana. The meds I have (pain and anti-inflammatory) are pills. I have been force feeding that a little at a time this morning, but if anyone has thoughts I’d love to hear them.

                  – I put a call in to the vet to see if there is another pain med option (like the marshmallow liquid), but no news there yet.

                  – he is still pooping, not eating cecals (thanks for the Benebac recommend, I’ll ask vet about it, may come in very handy as we don’t know how he will act after surgery). His poops are normal consistency but much smaller. In this circumstance should I be concerned about that?

                  – thanks for the tip about syringe feeding water, I probably wouldn’t have thought of that!

                  – Potential complications before surgery: he stops eating due to pain. During surgery: anesthesia and blood loss both could lead to death. After surgery: potentially fatal sores on the remaining foot, bone/spine issues (we already talked about getting him on Glucosamine to help with that), potentially injuring remaining leg if it isn’t strong enough to carry the weight (we will talk about home physical therapy to strength train it when I pick him up on Tuesday).

                  – He is getting so much snuggles. My heart is breaking for my little guy!!

                  – They said that because of his size the liquid meds weren’t practical, as he would need a lot, but if he is willing to eat it then it might be a better option (he got half his dose this morning, at best). Waiting on vet to call back on that.

                  – Thanks for the temp tip, I will do exactly that!!

Just in general I think I am doing ok, but I am so scared and worried for him. I can’t believe this happened and I am terrified of this not going well, along with really intimidated by the level of care he will need (at least in the next week or two). I have the time and inclination, I have just never had a pet hurt like this before.

Aww, poor thing. I agree with the others. But yes, do get liquid meds if at all possible. Bunnies are surprisingly adaptable and resilient. You might find yourself surprised by how quickly he will be up and about on 3 legs.

I am so sorry. It is sadly easy for a bunny to get a bad break. My last bunny, Manon, was paralyzed at the end of her life. I fed her organic baby food (always be cautious of sugar) and a syringe mash of her pellets. She was also able to eat greens. Also, my vet prescribed liquid pain med and it helped her tremendously. I was lucky that she had a very good appetite. She was responsive and did extremely well. Obviously, ask your vet about the organic baby food. Mine suggested it, but this was six years ago.

From my experience, I firmly believe Grimm will be fine with three legs and lead a happy life. It’s just getting past this critical part. Good thoughts going with you both.

Oh I forgot, metacam is an NSAID and those interfere with bone-healing, and it also makes the blood thinner = not good before surgery. Did they give you tramadol? Crush it beween the blades of two spoons and mix it with anything yummy. Plain canned pumpkin is often appreciated (not pie filling). You can mix CC with pumpkin mash or baby fruit- or veg puree. His poop is smaller now because he hasn’t eaten and not been moving around + some painkillers slow the gut a bit. He shouldn’t be moving around, so getting him to eat is of course what you can do for his tummy.

Your vets seem knowledgeable, that’s a great relief.

We have had members here with three-legged buns. Rabbits adapt really well.

                          Tramadol comes in liquid form.

                            Thanks again!

He is on 50mg Tramadol, every 8 to 12 hours and anti inflammatory at night. I had a hard time with last nights anti inflammatory in the Critical Care, so I tried this morning’s pain med in banana. Both were a big fail. Finally had success this evening with the Tramadol mixed in a syringe of orange juice.

The vet said that he should be back on his cecals in short enough time for it not to be a huge issue, but that if I want to feed him Benebac it sure wouldn’t hurt, so I’m going to pick some up tomorrow, along with a rectal thermometer.

I had to give him a butt bath last night because he was a mess down there. Tonight he is just like I left him, so… is it possible he isn’t producing cecals? Are they a daily thing?

I am trying to just think about the next step, but also plan for the future.

One long term question I have is about a litterbox. He will need one with a lower entry now. I have been using an underbed tote (he outgrew the regular sized box, and the underbeds have a low enough lip for him. It was trapped in a corner, so no risk of rolling). Most of the litterbox options or repurpose suggestions seem to be great… for regular sized rabbits. But at 14lbs, he already has a large turn radius. With one leg it’s only going to get bigger. We have some ideas about building a frame out of wood, but is there a better option? If now, what kind of wood is safe for him to nibble on?

I just really hope we get through this ok. I got him last September and I am hopelessly in love. Thanks for all the support. It’s been invaluable.

oh, also the vet said that they will have some liquid meds compounded for him for after the surgery, so no more pills after that. They just didn’t have the time to do it while we were there yesterday and wanted him to get home with everything he needed.

So what meds and dosage is he on?

If you’re really struggling to get the meds in, you might be able to find a compounding pharmacy that can change them into a liquid form and flavour it.

Really glad to hear he was eating some greens on his own. Perhaps hand feed some herbs, fresh grass if available and he might even eat hay if hand fed.

If you need the benebac – you can get if from amazon. I think it is a good idea to have a small packet on hand in case of emergencies.

It’ll be a long weekend for you, but we’re all sending Grimm get-better-soon vibes to let himself be fed and washed and cared for.

I don’t know how strong one back leg is (to get into litter tray) – have you checked on the disabled bunnies site ? Maybe a big (young & fit) bun can get up and over into a cat litter tray.

One option for a litter box for disabled rabbits is a potting tray. The front is very low, and you won’t be able to put in much depth of litter, but maybe it would be big enough. This one from Amazon, Tierra Garden GP48 Tidy Tray One Piece Potting Tray, is almost 2 feet square.

                                          Saturday Update:

Mixing the meds with orange juice seems to be working much better! He is on 50 mg tramadol, every 8 to 12 hours. He ate a banana last night along with some cilantro and kale. So while his appetite is waaay decreased, he IS eating a bare minimum on his own. I am also force feeding Critical Care and water a few times a day to make sure he is getting food and hydration in him.

He produced cecals last night. He didnt eat them, but he did pull the blob off him, so I guess that’s a sign he is feeling better? Thursday he just left it stuck to him.

I have checked out the disabled bunnies website, thanks for that tip! I am still looking for a larger option for low entry litterbox if anyone knows of one or thinks of something that can be repurposed.

Tobyluv, thanks for the link. That one MIIIGHT be big enough? I think I will go to Home Depot soon and see what they have in stock so I can see them in person. I am terrible at imagining size. The box he has now (that allows him room to turn around and hang out) is an underbed tote, so its maybe 2 foot wide and 4 foot long?

I have done exactly that for now, but it doesn’t seem like a long term solution. The plastic was sharp and jagged, so I have taped down a towel over it, and even as low as I could get it, he still needs a ramp (for now and while he is healing). If I can find a rabbit proof mat I can maybe make a longer term ramp/sharp edge cover. Any thoughts there?

Looking on the link that TobyLuv gave there was another option which people seem happy about for puppies…

                                                  I have a 6kg bun and she’s comfortable in a cat litter tray 14″ x 19″.

For the side you have already cut, there must be a way to make it smoother. With a sander, or polisher or file (softly or it will crack if it’s ‘cheap brittle plastic’) or try and heat the pointy bits to melt them out…(?! I’m talking out loud here….) It’s a shame to spend out money on another one if he can use the one you have for the minute, until you can see how he copes.

I’ve just glued (another) bit of carpet square on an Ikea Poang foot stool (with cushion removed) to help with traction as she goes up into her condo (her wicker square basket used for this purpose has just broken…. ) if I need to I will cut the legs to make it shorter…

If you don’t mind using disposable items and you think that Grimm would use a puppy pad, they make holders to keep the pads in place and to keep urine from soaking through. I see that some of the reviews mention the puppy can pull the pad out since it’s only anchored at the corners. I also don’t know how much of a chewer Grimm is. You wouldn’t want him to be chewing on the pads.

I don’t know if Home Depot would have the potting trays or not. I’ve only seen them online and in gardening catalogs.  Since it’s hard to imagine what size something is and if it will work, you may want to do what I do when trying to figure out a size.  I take a piece of newspaper and cut it to whatever dimensions I see for a product.  The dimensions given are likely outside ones, so the inside dimensions would be a tiny bit smaller.

This is brilliant advice, thank you so much!

Sunday Update: Grimm is producing cecals (but not eating them), eating and drinking well, and I have finally got the med procedure down. I bought a rectal thermometer just in case. What should his normal temp be? Also I bought him a stuffy and he seems to be very affectionate with his new snuggle friend.

So we are in a good place I think, going into his surgery tomorrow.

I am still just so scared for him

I remember seeing a potting tray in the garden centre once and immediately thinking it would be great for rabbit purposes! The one I saw was a pretty decent size.
For now though and post surgery, you may have to rely on puppy pads or vet bed if you can get hold of it.

There is a bit of info here on taking temperature and normal ranges.

                                                                                    Grimm made it through surgery!

He has low red blood cells (due to the break, the blood loss, and the IV fluids) so they are monitoring that. For folks who understand what this means they said they like to see the red blood cells at 30, he was at 20 yesterday before surgery, and 8 after surgery. They were able to get a donor bunny onsite in case he needed a blood transfusion, but his count is back up to about 20 this morning, so he seems to be bouncing back well.

He is astounding them with his appetite (he really is a glutton), and has been eating super well. He isn’t pooping much, but is making good gut sounds so she will be monitoring him today and expects he will produce sometime today.

He is getting around well with one leg, she said he seems to have figured out how his body works really fast.

He’s also going to be weaned off the IV pain meds today and onto something that I can administer at home, so they will be monitoring pain levels. We were able to visit him last night and he was just suuuper high. They had him on a 15 minute drip.

Thanks again for your support here, it has really been amazing. I have never had a sick or hurt pet, so I was feeling really alone and scared before I remembered this forum.

It doesn’t work in the “quick reply” field as far as I have seen.

The vets seem really taken aback by the sheer volume of kale that he plows through. He isn’t pooping enough for them yet though, so they are going to keep him tonight. They gave him an accupressure massage today so hopefully that will help get him moving. His gut sounds good though, and things ARE moving, they just aren’t coming out enough! Even though he will be in an area that doesn’t have official visitation, the vet is working late on paperwork tonight so she said we could set a meeting time with her to visit him. Have I mentioned that I love this vet? I really love this vet.

If you open the pictures in Paint, you can resize the pixels to 500 for the first option which will automaticall;y adjust the second option (horizontal/vertical), and that should get them down to a suitable size.

I’m so glad to hear he is doing better. I honestly believe he will move on from this and you will never notice that he only has 3 legs.

Update: when we got to the vet for our “meeting” with her she reported that about an hour after the acupuncture therapy he pooped A LOT (she even held her hands apart for emphasis) and had been producing nicely since then. So they felt very confident letting him come home in the morning.

Our visit went well. He was THE GRUMPIEST ever. If he was here he wanted to be there, if I was offering kale, he wanted the hay, etc. He was awake and aware and generally just a giant handful. Nothing could have made me happier.

He moved ok on the blanket but once he hit the tile it was a giant fail. He has never been great at tile and now it’s a lot harder.

They had the bandage off his surgery site and it looked way less scary. The site looks clean and even and I’m hoping that once it heals and grows fur back it will look fairly normal. They said that once they shaved him they were shocked by the bruising on his leg, whatever happened to him was really awful. I really wish we could figure it out.

He comes home in a few hours and then the next step begins!

But it looks like Grimm decided to do the right thing. I’m so happy to hear he’s recovering well! Your vet sounds great! I really like our vet too, when our kitty needed emergency surgery, she even took her home in the evening, to make sure she was okay during the night.

Also did not put up with any sort of bath this morning. He officially hit his NOOOPE point, lol. Now that we are home he immediately peed with extreme prejudice and curled up between me and his stuffie for a nap.

I AM EXHAUSTED. But so so very happy to have him home. I put a pic up on the instagram of his new asymmetrical haircut.

We need to go back in a week for a follow up and get his staples out.

We have a giant list of exercises for him to do. He is going to need his own google calendar. We have a bunch of stuff to buy/make for him to exercise on. The physical therapist said she was really amazed at how strong he was already and also how quick he was figuring out how to move around. When I described his lifestyle (including me teaching him to walk on his back feet for treats and going outside on the leash, and all the hilarious toys I make for him to throw around the house) it made more sense to her. Apparently I accidentally came up with a perfect bunny workout routine lol!

Setting them down, they can begin violently kicking. Not only is there a concern that their hind feet will scratch my forearms, but also the concern that they may snap their spinal cord by kicking.  Rabbits, no matter their size, have a kick that is much more powerful than you’d guess from their size.

I use the wensite for help with my paralyzed bunny. There is a section for limb loss. It is super helpful, a nice resource if you aren’t already using it. There is all sorts of handy ino on the website.

The side of her body then touches my forearm which seems to 1) calm her or 2) make her think she’s surrounded so gives in… !!

One of my buns kicks too much for that so I coax her into a cat carrier. I never pick her up myself unless she is already in the cat carrier, and I’ve had a chance to completely wrap her up in a towel. I’d be afraid that if I picked her up by her armpits, the legs would be free to kick and hurt herself.

He is eating, but his poop is still smaller than normal. He doesn’t seem to be eating his cecals but I’m giving him benebac, so that’s ok maybe?

He seems to be peeing less than before the surgery or right when he came home. He is still peeing, but it’s not a big puddle, it’s a small puddle. So I’m concerned about that

His movement is…. weird? He seems to be convinced that he lost all 4 legs. He is very flat all the time. Hasn’t been sitting or standing.

With his poops being smaller and him preferring to lay rather than sit or stand. Hope the little guy feels better. He is a strong trooper!

Maybe gentle gentle massage under belly would be nice for him? And help that nasty gas go away…

It’s not sth that gets absorbed by the body, but you might still want to check with your vet so it’s ok to give it to him now when he’s on other meds as well.

I second Vienna Blue in France and Bam’s suggestions of a tummy rub and simethicone (at Grimm’s vet’s ok).

How strange she picks the bun up and doesn’t just massage with buns back legs on the ground…. or is it so the gas bubbles it’s way ‘upwards’ (ie, towards the back end?!)  – would that work with humans? I tend to just rub my tummy – never tried standing on my head whilst doing it….

But it does work with bunnies. If you’re “lucky” you can even get to hear the bunny pass gas while you do it. I once heard Yohio pass gas, it was a very soft shoo-shoo-shoo.

I think I am going to focus on this next, and figure out some way to give him traction in there. He wont even try for the box because it’s super slidey and he freaks out.

Mobility: I think we have made a big step here. I have him on a tarped area right now (because of litterbox issues) covered with blankets. The blankets are slick and he is having a hard time standing up. I have ordered him one of those knobby woven rugs the size of his area, so I am hopeful that he will be able to move better on that. We experimented last night by putting him in a diaper (WHICH DID NOT WORK AT ALL BUT WAS WORTH IT FOR THE PIC) and letting him roam on the carpet. He was much better there. So… here’s to hoping.

I put up his old water bottle (that he never used) to see if he would use that, and yes, he is all over it. So he is back to peeing giant puddles.. yay

Adds loads of traction, as long as he doesn’t discover it and chew on it.

I’ve said before, Zou doesn’t like slipping either – I think it’s a big bun problem. But she is more than happy to walk, run and binky on the very nice second hand (cheap) carpet rug i got specially for her – I understand you not wanting him to pee on your carpet, but a carpet rug on an otherwise slippery area will limit him to an area, one that he can pee on if necessary! Or a cut off from a carpet shop…. or a big sample from a carpet sample shop place….

Zou binkying on her rug is a bit like Reese binkying on the bed… somehow, their radar controls their movements and they turn around at high speed when approaching no-man’s-land

I’ve got newspaper in cat tray and on top of that shredded paper, so the shreds are like tablged spaghetti and holds itself all together and its nonslippable…

I removed the top blanket out of his area and he is already moving around a little better, so I think the carpet will make a BIG difference. And yeah, we basically bought a simple woven one knowing it will get chewed and peed on and destroyed. We are hoping to put down hardwood floors in the next year or two so if he does well with this rug I will get a bunch more to make islands in the slippery lava for him.

We won’t know how it works until he has started using the box again, so lets hope that is soon.

That means we should be cleared to submerge him. Which is great news because MAN THIS DUDE NEEDS A BATH. We have been cleaning him with the sprayer and a washcloth, but we are not up for the job, clearly.

Making an appt for monday just in case.

If it is, monday may be too far away. Keep an eye on him and he if he doesn’t become lethargic or uninterested in food. If so, get to a vet ASAP. All the best wishes and healing vibes!

Take his temp if he doesn’t hate you too much when you do that. Infection in a bunny can cause under-temp as well as a fever.

I got an appt for yesterday morning. When I checked him that morning I could see a tiny bit of pus seeping out, so I knew for sure he was infected.

The vet was really amazed and disheartened at how infected it was. Apparently the infection had caused the stitches to come out under his staples, and the infection is really bad. He is back to “might die”.

They put a honey bandage on the wound and left it open. The honey is supposed to draw the infection out while promoting healing. We have to go back every day this week to have it changed and checked. They are also going to use a cold laser and acupuncture daily to lower inflammation and promote healing.

They have changed him to a new type of antibiotics that we will start today. the new kind is Marboflxacin (?) it’s supposed to be stronger.

The vet has been telling us that we are doing everything right, I just, I wish there was something I can do to fix him. This is so sad. I am so deeply worried for him.

And, Grimm has been a brave bunny throughout this. I am sad that you both have to go through this and I hope Grimm heals soon.

He seems to have stopped or slowed production of infection (pus and whatnot). We will see how it looks tomorrow. He did shred his bandage a bit but not too bad, and they got a better seal on it today, so hopefully he will stay out of it.

Tomorrow they will try straight sugar instead of honey. They are also doing the cold lasers and acupuncture daily. They said he was really well behaved, adn they are continually amazed at how tolerant he is of being held and having his leg messed with. He is really just the sweetest little guy.

I am really worried about the costs. So far they have covered a lot of the cost with teaching funds, but that is pretty much used up at this point and beyond this week we will have to pay 100%.

I’m sure if you speak to the team there will be a solution with the costs. Talk to them about it now, so they know and so you don’t have a horrid shock… Ask them to limit the treatment to the necessities and not the ‘lets see’ teaching methods.

I don’t know if that’s allowed. I paid for grad school as a TA and often worked off the clock and with no pay to tutor struggling students. I know its not the same and there may be regulations in the health fields, but its worth asking. Its good experience for the student.

Sugar has been used as an inexpensive wound dressing for more than three centuries to control odor and infection. The use of sugar is based on its high osmolality drawing fluid out of the wound and inhibiting the growth of bacteria. The use of sugar also aids in the debridement of necrotic tissue while preserving viable tissue. Granulated sugar is placed into the wound cavity in a layer 1-cm thick and covered with a thick dressing to absorb fluid drawn from the wound. The sugar dressing should be changed once daily or more frequently whenever “strike-through” is seen on the bandage. During the bandage change, the wound should be liberally lavaged with warm saline or tap water. Sugar dressings may be used until granulation tissue is seen. Once all infection is resolved, the wound may be closed or allowed to epithelialize. Because a large volume of fluid can be removed from the wound, the animal’s hemodynamic and hydration status must be monitored and treated accordingly. Hypovolemia and low colloid osmotic pressure are complications that may be associated with this therapy.

Honey has also been used for wound dressings over the centuries. Honey’s beneficial effects are thought to be a result of hydrogen peroxide production from activity of the glucose oxidase enzyme. The low pH of honey also may accelerate healing. Honey used for wound healing must be unpasteurized, and the source of the honey appears to be a factor in its effectiveness. Manuka honey may be the best option for wound care. The contact layer wound dressings should be soaked in honey before application. The bandage should be changed daily or more frequently as needed.

The vet said that the infection is significantly worse. Leaving it open to heal is no longer a viable option. Which leaves surgery. They can do surgery, where they open him up even more (the wound is already the size and depth of an apple), and clean out the infected tissue/muscle. Then they have to figure out how to close him up, And hope that the infection does not return. But the likely outcome is not good. That basically puts us at a worse place than we were when the original infection set in. It is likely they will miss some. Even if they dont, he is still pooping and peeing all over the wound. He is still dragging it on the ground. He would still be tearing his bandages off. And he is still laying on it, creating pressure.

We decided, with much crying, to have him put down. So that will be happening in a few hours. Until then we have had lots of snugs and I fed him all the (edible) houseplants.

I have been quietly following this thread and rooting for you and Grimm throughout this ordeal. It breaks my heart to read this news but it is clear you did absolutely everything humanly possible to help him. He knows he is loved, cared for, and appreciated. Nothing will make this easier but there is some comfort in knowing he will be hopping over the rainbow without any pain or suffering. My best to you and your family during this difficult time. <333.

For the dogs, the beagle and two basset hounds…each one was such a very loving companion. They were such good friends and loving animals. I’ve had a cat that was forced on me…didn’t like cats initially, but Annie Cat brainwashed me into loving her so very much.  She died at 19 1/2 years of kidney failure. Annie Cat was landed on me in Australia, and I shipped her back to the US to live with me and she lived for a very old age.  Here in the US, my wife’s daughter caught an abandoned rabbit in a city park.  The rabbit, Bunny, was probably a little less than a year old.  She lived to be approximately 11 1/2 years old as a house rabbit.  For each of my animals, I’ve had to confront the challenge of having them put down because of age problems.  The pain of putting them down is almost that I don’t want to have animals living with me, but the opposing thought is that they have been born and are alive, I should try to take care of them and make their lives comfortable and happy.  I now have two Flemish babies (well OK 11 months now, maybe the varmints are not babies! ) living with us.  They are free ranging house rabbits and they live a blessed life.I can’t keep from thinking that if I wasn’t taking care of them they would otherwise be living miserable lives in a cage somewhere.

I share your feelings about loosing a pet.  I think that in the last waning moments of consciousness your rabbit felt very loved and  cherished. That was a great gift for your rabbit.

He was my first rabbit. I had no idea what I was getting into. He was willfull, bullheaded, and contrary. He was nothing like the timid “prey animal” I was expecting.

I’m glad I was able to give him a life full of songs, dancing, hats, friends, and space to run that he never would have had as a show bunny (which was the breeders intention for him).

But he had a great life. And he died as loved as he lived, in my arms. I guess you can’t really ask for more.

I am so very sorry. The bond that grows between you and an animal you are nursing is hard to explain and saying goodbye all the more heart wrenching, when so much energy has gone into their care in the previous weeks.

How well he came through surgery and adjusting without his hind leg. Amazing bunny! Thank you for sharing about him. Please continue to do so if it helps you.
