My parents had gotten this rabbit from a feed store, meaning he’s likely not well-bred and would experience a shorter life span, more health issues, etc. so I count him as an ‘older’ rabbit even though he’s technically only late-middle age.

Thumper is 5 years and 7 months old. He’s a white New Zealand male. A few months ago, I noticed some loose skin on his upper stomach, behind his front legs; like cats and bigger dogs get with old age. I felt them and there was nothing in them, they felt like your average loose skin, so we decided it was just symptoms of his aging.

I noticed today that they’re scarce in fur, which made me more concerned for him. I haven’t felt them again yet – he was eating when I noticed and I didn’t want to bother him. They don’t look like a tumor, just like loose,  flabby skin. He was never overweight. He’s a show rabbit and he’s always weighed in at an ounce or two underweight, but that’s just what his healthy weight is, so it’s not a concern. 

Since he is my parents rabbit, and we have so many, he is housed outside like a typical farm or show rabbit would be. The cages are something like this: http://www.grit.com/~/media/Images/GRT/Editorial/Articles/Magazine%20Articles/2012/02-01/DIY%20Wire%20Rabbit%20Cages%20and%20Equipment/Rabbit-Hutches.jpg so he is on mesh flooring (which I don’t like, but the pros have said it’s fine as long as the mesh is small enough to be comfortable on their feets.) so I do think it’s possible that laying on the mesh has caused this skin to loose some fur, in which case, I’ll put more platforums into his cage He is much more than  show/farm rabbit to me; he’s very, very friendly. He nuzzles, he bruxes, he snuggles, and he loves attention so my whole family adores him, but with the amount of rabbits we have….well, he gets grouped in with the farm/show buns.

His next wellness checkup isn’t until February. What do you think this could be? If it’s something serious I’ll get him to the vet ASAP! Thank you.
