This may be an odd question, but I’m wondering if it sounds like my bunny is starting to finally like being petted. We’ve had him a little over 3 weeks and in general, he’s not been too excited about being touched… unless he’s been given yummy treats to snack on as a distraction!
This morning, I was trying to shoo him to his pen so I could go to work. He was upstairs by our bedrooms, but couldn’t get in, since we are finally getting better at keeping our doors closed!
He loves exploring places he’s not allowed to go. (Our rooms aren’t bunny proofed.) I think he also likes the cool draft that comes from below the closed doors. Anyway, since he usually won’t accept much petting, I started petting him with the thought that he’d probably run away from me and to his pen. Instead, he sat there still while I petted him for around 10 minutes. His eyes were slightly closed, his ears weren’t plastered to his back, and he didn’t seem to be hyperventilating. Could it really be that he was enjoying being petted?!?
Given his tendency to run away when he doesn’t like something, I’ve got to assume he was seriously enjoying it, but it’s so unusual and new, I want to make sure I’m not misreading any signs.
Also, as I was stroking him, he was chewing or maybe grinding his teeth. I’m not sure exactly what he was doing, but his mouth was moving and I heard a sound coming from it. Is this a normal sign of enjoyment? It seemed odd, but I’m so new to bunnies.
After a while of being petted he suddenly popped up and became the fully active, ornery self we’re so familiar with. Being a little late to work was worth it for some good bunny time
