I am desperate for your help with our petition to legalise pet bunnies in QLD Australia… yes, you heard it right – Queensland is the only place in the world that has such law as the government failed to understand the difference between a house bunny and a wild hare. In practice, people still have them but they have no access to veterinary care (vets can be fined up to five thousands dollars). This leads to sick bunnies’ slow death often from gestational stasis due to pain and discomfort. Similarly, when many Queenslanders realise the legislation (as it’s not something that is obvious to anyone!) they dump their furry friends along the NSW border outflowing NSW shelters that cannot cope with the numbers. Currently, if a person is caught with a house rabbit (including desexed and microchipped) in QLD they face up to forty for thousands AUD penalty and six months in jail. Their buns are removed by the local council and killed as they are treated as pest by the law. It’s an outdated law, not based on science and contributes to animal cruelty.
