  Just got home from the garden centre and bought a large beautiful bleeding heart plant to plant beside my Snow White’s grave. I put it on the bedroom floor and went to put some things away. come back ten mins later and half of it is either eaten up or shredded on the floor. Clover was happy feasting on a pile of dandelions freshly picked from the garden I put in its food bowl, what compelled it to leave that feast to go chew on my new plant I don’t understand!!!
  
  Are Bleeding Heart plants toxic to rabbits?
  If they are what should I do – no vet at this time of night!

  Yes, according to Medi Rabbit, all parts of bleeding heart plants are toxic. If you scroll down, you will see it listed on page 5. http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/GI_diseases/Food/Toxic_plants_en.pdf
  
  I found this information from the ASPCA, although they only mention plants poisonous to dogs, cats and horses, so I don’t know if they would have knowledge about rabbits if you call them.

  I have found bleeding hearts listed as toxic on several sites. This site, the Wisconsin HRS chapter, lists it as a class 2 toxic plant, saying that it may cause an allergic reaction. At least it must not be as toxic as some plants. http://wisconsinhrs.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/WHRS-Library_ToxicPlantsList.pdf. They say that you should call your vet to see if a consultation is warranted.

  Bleeding heart can irritate the skin, so I would think it would irritate mucous membranes (i.e. the mouth). I don’t know what effects it has if ingested. MediRabbit has it in black (instead of red) so it’s considered toxic, but not extremely toxic. The problem with toxic plants is that they can be listed as toxic for a variety of reasons.
