  I came home from work (I work nights) this morning and Dottie, our little baby dwarf that we just got had crossed the rainbow bridge! When I left yesterday evening she was fine! She was eating, drinking, and playing normally! I had just cleaned her cage, given her fresh hay, and her serving of pellets for the night, cuddled her and she was fine, not acting abnormally or anything! I just came home and she was sprawled out on the floor of her pen, we’ve only had her not even a full week, so I thought yay she’s finally comfortable enough to be kicked back and comfortable but no. My daughter and I cleaned her cage every day, made sure she always got plenty of exercise, always had fresh hay, not too many pellets, and a serving of healthy greens every morning. I don’t understand, she was such a lovable bun and we took care of her by the books! What could have possibly happened!? We’re both so heart broken can you guys help so I don’t repeat whatever mistake I made!?

  I should also mention her poop and urine were normal, she didn’t have any feces on her bum just urine. She hasn’t been gone long because although she was cold she wasn’t stiff….someone please help!

  I am very sorry :,( It seems like you were doing everything right. Where did you get her from? maybe where ever she came didnt take care of her.

  It could’ve been congenital heart disease. It doesn’t sound like sth you could’ve caused. These things do happen, tragically. You can never know for sure what it was unless you subject her to a necropsy.
  
  I’m really sorry you lost her. You had no chance of helping her since she didn’t show any signs of being sick.

  Thanks guys, that makes me feel a bit better but its still heart breaking. We got her from a lady in front of the tractor supply store. They were obviously well taken care of because Dottie was a cuddled from the start so we know she was handled and loved on a lot. She came with greens, pellets, and hay along with a toy and brush, so I don’t think she was mistreated. The lady did say it was an accidental litter. We paid $25 for her.

  Bam is 100% correct, sometimes these things do happen unfortunatly. Seems like she got the best of care.

  Thank you so much guys, I don’t know if I should get my daughter another bun now…..she’s so heartbroken from losing Dottie but I don’t know if I can handle losing another

  So sorry for your pain – I wouldn’t worry about losing another – if your daughter is up for it, it sounds as if you did everything right, but as already said, these things can happen. So I would say YES, open your hearts to another bun. (Myabe not from the same lady…..)
  Could you rescue a needy bun ?

  Well, grandpa came to the rescue and surprised us with a velveteen lop and a Netherland dwarf, both rescues from the local animal shelter. Both females about 3 months old. Looks like I’m getting buns anyway….my daughter and I are ecstatic but they’re so terrified….poor things. Thank you so much everyone for such amazing support. I’m off to research these two breeds, I feel horrible having new buns so quickly.

  Actually we named them flopsie, and satin, I wish I would’ve thought of spottie and Lottie lol. They’re both much more skittish than Dottie was (can’t blame them dad said the animal shelter had them houses right next to cats since they don’t have their own bun area) so we’ve been sitting on my bed with their cage open but they don’t trust us enough to come out. Not to mention they just discovered their cage had a second story and are busy arranging it so its theirs lol….I’ve never had a bun (Flopsie) so picky about how her cage is situated.
