  So I haven’t been on here since Frodo died last year but I have had a new bun and suddenly have medical problems that I am wondering if anyone else has experienced.
  
  So my new bun Samwise Gamgee ( I have a theme going) has been healthy since I got him in fall of last year (I got him from a friend of a friend whose kids outgrew him). As far as I know he has no medical issues per his former owner and he is only about 3.
  
  In the beginning of the month I came home one tuesday night with him having had diarrhea (pudding consistency) and a bloody nose. He was in the hospital till friday evening.
  
  The GI issues as bad as stasis could be ended up not being his main issue even though he didn’t poop until Thursday. his pcv (platelet cpount) kept dropping (normal is 32) his went down to 21 at one point. He never stopped eating but none of the vets could figure out why he was loosing blood. He kept bleeding from his nose. My vet put him on enalipril which is for high blood pressure as a last resort. They could not do blood transfusion since that could kill him and because there was still no reason from the blood loss. (short of spending 2 grand on an MRI to tell me he would maybe need a surgery he could not live through.
  
  Has anyone had to use enalipril long term? Has it worked? or diarrhea issues coming on suddenly? So far it seems to be helping Samwise and working. Though tonight he had some more diarrhea ( had left over metronidazole and metoclorimide so I dosed him for the night). But no bleeding and he is still acting all normal save for being mad I had to give him a butt bath.

  I’m afraid I’ve never even heard of something like this. But the moment I read ‘nosebleeds’ it made me think of two things: the hemorrhagic virus buns can get (although it’s fast acting, so doubt it) and a tumour that might be causing bleeding. I’m guessing your vet ruled out the latter?

  The only way to fully rule out cancer or even lesions would be an MRI at the university but it’s 3 hours away. Plus its 2 grand and his insurance will not cover most of it. But he was perfectly fine up until earlier this month and the enalipril is working and his pcv came up to 35. All of the other blood work and exam is normal. He has no other symptoms. Of anything.
  
  The vets did sedate him and look in his nose but they couldn’t see anything obvious. No one brought up the virus but I am assuming that’s because they ruled that out. He was on 8 different meds for about a week after I brought him home including Baytril to cover all basis.e is still on Vitamin K and the enalipril.
  
  He goes in next Friday for a recheck and as long as his blood work is fine he stops the meds. Though the vets and I do think he will end up on the enalipril for life since that is what he responded to. Otherwise he is normal though angry he doesn’t have free reign of my room anymore, that should change once I get his poopy but under control and shave him down on saturday

  This whole ordeal must have been completely scary! Very glad the vets were able to stablise him and he has somewhat recovered. I hope he continues to do so. {{{Samwise!}}}
  
  No experience with enalipril, sorry. Hopefully some other members will have some experience with it.
  
  He goes in next Friday for a recheck and as long as his blood work is fine he stops the meds.
  
  Oh good. I was going to ask if he’s had follow up bloodwork done.
  Has he had a fecal test done? Maybe even test fecal and cecal poop.
  
  Could he have found rat bait somewhere?
  I buy my pellets in a bulk pack as it’s more economic. I think it’s bagged up at the feed store. I’m always paranoid that some bait could get in with the pellets if they use it in the store. So any pellets that look different get tossed. Even though it’s normal to have some graduation in colour. But like i said, im paranoid!
  
  I also wondered about things like E. coli or salmonella on fresh produce. But I think with a bacterial infection like that, you’d see a rise in white cells wouldn’t you?

  Thanks. I was so worried, it basically all came down to- lets see if he responds to this last medication and if not, there is nothing else we can do and I would have had to put him down.

  They put him on metronidazole and baytril in case of bacterial infection or parasites and all that. They literally had him on 7 liquid meds and an eye drop to cover every base. But all test except for the PCV count came back normal.
  
  Could he have found rat bait somewhere?
  
  He has been on Vitamin K the whole time (that and the enalapril) he never stopped. So he will have been on that for a whole month just in case it was poison but they don’t really think it was since he never initially responded to it and The vitamin K was the first think he got.
  
  He is free reign in my bedroom. And both myself and my roomate looked and there was nothing he could have gotten into. (plus both my cats and the dogs would have also been showing symptoms of something). He gets pellets but ts one of those small bags from oxbow from petsmart.

  Yes. If it was any type of infection something in the blood work was off but he was on baytril just in case anyways.
