Hi everyone. So I am a bit confused about the difference between a standard Rex and a mini Rex. I have a Rex male rabbit (neutered) who is 3 yrs 9 mon old. From what I’ve read he doesn’t seem to meet the weight requirements for each Rex category. He is free range and he weighs 5.5 pounds. He is not fat and is very active. How can I tell if he’s a mini or a standard?

        Thanks!

Breed standards are there for the purpose of showing. So when you see weight requirements, that just means that the bunny has to fall within that range in order to be considered “show quality”. This doesn’t mean all bunnies of a particular breed are going to meet breed standards. So you could have a “pet quality” mini rex, which simply means he is a mini rex bunny but he doesn’t meet breed standards.

Another possibility could be that he is half mini and half full sized, so his weight is falling somewhere in between.

I have a mini rex, and she is around 5 pounds as well. At her last vet visit in February she was 4.8 pounds. I agree with the above statement, that the weight limits are for showing, and such, but I would work under the assumption that your bun is a mini rex!

My mini rex is about 4lbs, so i have to guess mini for yours as well. I think standard rexes usually start about 8lbs, but i could be totally wrong. I only have smalls, minis, and dwarves

I’m not sure but he’s lovely. My Mini-Rex was about 3.5 lbs.
