Hello everyone! Thanks for accepting me on this fabulous site.
Here is my back story: In September, I got a 3 month old Lion Head mix bunny (Harvey Hopper Hospice Hare), and had him fixed at 4 months. He was mellow yellow from the beginning and he is still very sweet and loves to cuddle.
Because I know bunnies are generally happier and healthier with a mate, I got a him female friend. She too was three months old, and I did all of the introductions as instructed. They loved each other.
I had her fixed as well, but she seemed to get more and more skittish after the fact. The reason that was an issue is because they were/are therapy bunnies. I take them to assisted living facilities. Usually they stayed in the basket and the patients would pet them, talk to them, blow kisses, etc.. Harvey, my boy, is also able to be held.
Hedda Hopper, the girl, was starting to get restless. She nipped at a patient once, but did not draw blood. Two days later, I was trying to pick her up to take her for therapy, and she did a Matrix-Ninja-Bunny type move and sliced open my eyelid. It was at that moment I decided she was not happy as a therapy bunny, and I wouldn’t make her do it. I found her a great home with a vet. tech who has lots of animals. She wanted a litter-box trained Californian, and that is what Hedda was.
Now that I have gone on too long, here is my dilemma:
1. Harvey loved having a mate. I want him to have one, but I want the mellloooowest breed I can find. What would be a good breed? I am hearing Lionhead or Lop eared.
2. I hear that it would be easier to get him a female, but I also hear the females are generally more fidgety and territorial. I don’t want to incorrectly assume that all males are more mellow.
Please help! It is very costly to maintain and spay/neuter these buns, but I want to be a responsible owner and help them live happy, healthy lives. If I can avoid going through “Hedda Hell” again, I would love to.
PS – A co-worker SWEARS it is because she had red eyes. Go figure.
