  My 8 year old rabbit won’t eat hay. I wasn’t very educated on rabbits before and I realized I haven’t ever fed my rabbit hay. I started searching on the internet and researched how to care for rabbits. I have done everything wrong. So I have decided to make life better and more comfortable for my senior bun.I ordered 3rd cutting hay from a website because I read store bought hay is usually overpriced a nd stale and also most rabbits will love 3rd cutting because its so soft. I bought it and put it in. I was so happy when he ate it. BUT IT ONLY LASTED A DAY. He has since never touched his hay. I put it next to his litter box and in his litter box. He only has 1/4 cup of pellets per day. I get really worried that he’ll get sick because he doesn’t eat hay. Someone please help.

  What type of hay was it? Some bunnies prefer a different type of hay. I feed mine medow grass, and sometimes Timothy hay.

  It was Timothy hay. I don’t know how to get different hay without worrying about it going to waste. Do you know of any place I can get small samples. I don’t have the kind of transportation to go to a feed store. There aren’t many nearby.

  I just found a site that offers small samples at a reasonable price. I just don’t want to buy a lot of hay that will possibly go to waste. Thank you for your help!

  You could also try orchard grass. It’s a sweeter grass that many rabbits prefer over Timothy. Have you tried hand feeding him some hay? He might be more interested in taking it from your fingers than just eating it on his own. There is a product called hay toppers, which is comprised of dried herbs and flowers. You sprinkle it over their hay to entice them if they aren’t good hay eaters. It is sold here in the BB store, and other places.

  Its been awhile and I’ve offered Chewuby different kinds of hay but he still turns his nose up. I’ve tried spraying it with Apple Juice (homemade,no added sugar) or rubbing a small piece of banana into the hay but he usually licks it off or eats really tiny pieces of hay. I’m really worried

  They were sold out of hay toppers when I tried to buy. Hopefully they’ll be in stock soon

  What was he eating before? You need to be careful when dramatically changing an animal’s diet (especially a rabbits). Is he still eating what he used to? Slowly introduce the better healthier diet so his gut doesn’t get a shock.
  
  Tobyluv gave excellent advice. Hopefully your bun will slowly over time learn what’s good for him. You’re had him for 8 years so I wouldn’t be super worried yet.

  He is still eating the same pellets he has always been on. He used eat just pellets and fruits and veggies as treats. I have tried to offer him tastier grass but he doesnt eat it. I tried feeding by hand like Tobyluv suggested but he just kinda bites it and then throws it onto the floor. Thank you all for the advice. I occasionally see him nibble at the hay but its all I can really ask for.
