› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Orphaned Kit?
Molly kindled yesterday morning. I’m aware they only feed their babies one a day. I have a baby monitor rigged in her room, so I can spy on her without causing her stress. I checked the kits this morning, and they all have full, round bellies. Except one. He/she has a sunken in belly, and was very cold. It was very cold, not dead, definitely alive, but it was quite cold. It had also been shoved away from the huddle of kits in the centre of the box. I put it back with the other kits an hour ago, and checked it again just a few minutes ago, and it had fallen out of the huddle, and was lying at the side. It doesn’t look deformed or small, just hungry. I read somewhere that you can hold the bunny over the kit and allow it to nurse, would ot be okay to do this? Molly is a feral, she also bites. If I wore gloves, and caught her, then held her above the malnourished kit, would it work?
Try to keep the kit warm, that’s really important. If mamabun won’t nurse it and you can’t make her do it, you can give it milk for baby kittens (baby cats) as a substitute for bunny milk.
It is however common that not all babies make it.
I attempted to get Molly to nurse the hungry kit, but it didn’t work. I even tried putting her in a bunny burrito, leaving her stomach uncovered, with no success. I then rushed the kit to the vet, they kept him/her warm while the vet brought out some kitten milk replacement for me. I bought another small animal heating pad, the ones I have are being used. Found a kritter keeper that I use for my hamster transport, sanitized it, and put the heater under it. I put a clean, white towel in it. Then I put the kit in it to keep him warm. This was about three hours ago, he is still alive. I fed him the kmr with a syringe and his belly swelled up. My concern is that the milk doesn’t contain the same nutritional value that moms milk would, I read that he may not survive because of this. Is there a way I can ‘harvest’ moms milk and feed it to him? I really want him to survive, I am taking a few days off of work so I can make sure he’s okay. I put him in a clean, quiet and safe environment, he seems pretty happy right now, full belly, and staying warm.
I think kmr is the best you can do, but I’m not 100% sure. I think our member Cottontail gave her Peter kmr, he was found as a helpless, very young baby and his mother was gone so there was nobody to harvest anything from.
The BB forums are not the forums with the most expertise on care of newborn kits, I’m afraid. We love having you here, you are an amazing bunny person – but in matters of life and death for a baby bunny I honestly think you can get better help at http://www.rabbitsonline.net/
They have a forum section called The Rabbitry and Show Room where matters of breeding is discussed and I think you’ll find experienced breeders there who can help you with this. We don’t have any breeders here.
Okay, thank you so much! I will check out that forum.
Congratulations Molly and Granny !! (wink wink)
Golly what a lot of work you have unexpectedly…. poor you – so kind !
Good luck with the follow ups – we can’t wait to see how you get on – one thing is sure if litt’un does survive I’d put money on him staying put where he is !!! LOL. he will be one tame litltle loving baby !!
I’m not sure if the post went through at the other forum, I’ll check, but it doesn’t really matter. After I attempted to post my question(couldn’t find the ‘submit’ button) I called a friend. She used to be a rabbit breeder, and is the reason I have rabbits today. Being the amazing person she is, she drove three hours to my city. Now she is hovering over my shoulder as I type, and is staying until the kit is out of danger. I managed to collect milk from Molly! By taking a syringe with a relatively large opening, placing it over her nipple, and gently massaging the base of the nipple, while my friend very gently and slowly pulled back on the end. We managed to collect enough milk to feed the kit. He got fed twice today, I hope that is okay. The scream of joy that both me and my friend let out probably scared every creature in my house! I’m still crying tears of joy! Now the kit has a better survival chance! Haven’t named it yet, but I’m so attached to the little thing, even though I’ve been told not to name it, as I’ll just be more upset if it doesn’t survive, it probably doesn’t matter. Any name ideas? I don’t know the gender yet, it’s too young to tell.
Wow! Thank you and your friend for being so amazing to this tiny bun.
I agree with Vienna: if the little one makes it, you’ll definitely be its bonded momma.
As for names, I like Kiwi for either boy or girl. Or Bilbo or Frodo, because the round belly reminds me of adorable hobbits. ![]()
(((((Well Wishes for Baby)))))
Hope the little bub is okay. Sometimes the Mama bun decides not to feed one and pushes him out of the nest because he is smaller or sickly. ![]()
That’s an amazing bun lover !! 3 hrs to get to you…. ahhhhhh.
(It would have been quicker to motorbike courrier the kit in a package to her !!!!) – I’M JOOOOOOKING !!!!
(I am! I wouldn’t have put kit in a package without a mini helmet on him !!
)
I’m loving Kiwi as a name
(Bilbo sounds too close to something else if you change a B to a D….. though Billy passes for a girl or boy)
Kiwi is adorable, I think that will be it’s name?
Naaaw, that’s so cute =)
Yipeee!
And Vienna: ROTFL but I see your point.

LOL that reminds me of when my friend called me to see how Olly was, he asked what he was up to, I said calmly and without laughing.”Riding up and down the street on a moped with his leathers and little goggles on.”
Haha, I’m trying to imagine a rabbit riding a motorcycle with a tiny helmet.? Kiwi has been doing fantastic, I’m going back to work next week. I’ve been carrying him around, he is so tiny and cute! My friend is leaving on the weekend, thats how great he’s doing! He is getting a fuzzy coat, I can’t tell what colour he’ll be, but it’s nice to know he is growing up. I’m definitely keeping him! After all the work and stress he put me through, he’s going to live out the rest of his life with me. I’m thinking about keeping Molly, but I will continue fostering her for now. I’d love to keep all the kits, but I already have so many pets, and if I keep Molly and all her kits, that would be nine more rabbits! I love rabbits and all, but nine more is too many! My rescue has found homes for almost all of them! They won’t go to their homes for a long time, but we have five out of seven homes found, all the homes are local! A few people that work at the rescue adopted one. I can’t wait until they are a bit older, I know Bobbi and Oreo will love playing with them!
That’s such great news! Go, Kiwi, go!
I know what you mean, Guinea. Every time I pop into the pet shop to buy hay or litter, I want to go home with all the furballs in the bun run.
They are very cute! I just want to cuddle them all!
Some people came to my house today claiming to be Mollies original owners. They had found out through the rescue. They said her name was princess and that she had escaped from their backyard hutch. They had purposely bred her because they though the babies would be cute. That makes me so angry! How could someone ever do that. They had a little girl who begged and cried to have Molly and her babies back. Thankfully, her parents said no. They were planning to rehome her anyways because the girl payed no attention to her whatsoever, which explains why Molly is so skittish. They also offered me the father rabbit! He was kept in the same hutch as Molly?. They don’t want him either. I said yes, and will be adopting him tomorrow. I let the family see Molly and her babies. The kid ran over to and caught Molly, then began hitting her really hard to ‘punish her for escaping’. Molly freaked out and tryed to escape, in the process she scratched the kid, who them started crying. The parents got angry at me for some reason! I am so angry at that kid for what the little brat did to Molly. Molly isn’t injured, but is now hiding, and won’t come out. I’m so glad I will be adopting the male rabbit. Now I’m going to keep Molly, the father bun, and little Kiwi. That will be five bunnies in total when I rehome the kits! I’m turning into a crazy bunny lady! The kid also begged for one of the kits. I’m not sure why, as she neglected Molly and the other bun, but her parents said yes. I said no, and got into yet another argument with them! What kind of parent would let their kid get another rabbit, after treating the others badly! I’m excited to see what Mollies reaction is to see her mate! I’ve already scheduled him to be neutered in two weeks, they will be separated before then, and for a month after surgery. Do you think it’s okay if they have a supervised date through an x pen? Or should I quarantine him from her, they’ve only been apart for a few days, but she is nursing, so I’d hate for her to catch anything.
Yowzers! That’s a lot of drama for one visit. It must be tough to be ignorant AND to have Finding Nemo’s Darla as a daughter. I’m glad you stood your ground.
And how exciting that you shall reunite Molly with her husbun.
I’m not sure I can give adequate advice on the supervised visit. After only a few days apart, they would probably be thrilled as they must miss each other. But since they’d have to be in neighbouring but separate spaces (so as not to touch and make bunny magic through the fence in the blink of an eye) Molly might get frustrated? I really don’t know how she’d react…
As for the quarantine… again, could the husbun have been exposed to something new in their former hutch in the few days they were apart? No idea… ![]()
That is my concern, that he could have possibly picked something up in the few days they were apart. Haha the finding nemo reference made me laugh. She was holding a kit(this was before she hit Molly) and started yelling that she wasn’t leaving without one. Poor parents. She didn’t even ask to hold the kit, just grabbed it. Right from the nest box! I’m excited to see my new rabbit tomorrow! They showed me a pic of him, I think he is a dutch.
Poor molly and poor kit, hope every bunny is ok today.
I would go with keeping the two close enough to communicate, at least til you see if there is any signs of frustration.
I agree, keep them so they can communicate but not f-nicate. Buns can mate through cage bars and there’s no problem for a girl bun to get pregnant again while she’s still nursing. When he is neutered, they must be apart for a month more because that’s how long sperm can be viable in a male’s body.
Finding Nemo’s Darla LOL!!!
I got ‘Thumper’ about an hour ago. He doesn’t look like a thumper, so I will change his name. I set up the xpen before I got him, it is in the guest room ensuite, so I can keep them together, but separate them before there is a risk of babies. I can also close a door between them if need be, otherwise I will just fold in the xpen so they can see each other but not touch. I put him in his xpen, and he immediately ran over to her, she ran over to him too! He began licking the top of her head. They are now flopped side by side separated by the xpen. There have been no mating attempts, so that’s good. It is so easy to tell that they love each other. Do rabbits mate for life? I don’t know if I should have done this, but I introduced Kiwi to ‘Thumper’! Thumper didn’t ignore him like Molly did, but instead curled up around Kiwi and began licking him. When I took Kiwi away, he looked so sad, but ran back to Molly and licked her again. They are still flopped, this is the absolute calmest I have ever seen her! I still can’t pet her, but I can walk within a few feet without her sprinting away. Any name ideas for ‘Thumper’? He is a browish red and white dutch with absolutely perfect markings. He does have horrible sore hocks, they are open wounds. I’m taking him to the vet later today, as his poor feet look so so sore. Bobbi used to get sore hocks, of course she doesn’t anymore, her wheelchair stops that, but a few years ago, my vet used to have to wrap them. I never did figure out the reason she got them. She lived on soft flooring, her litter box was spotless, she didn’t have wire flooring anywhere. ‘Thumper’s’ sore hocks are so bad he can hardly walk he’s in so much pain. He loves Molly though, he ran over to her. Oreo and Bobbi have a bond like that. They never leave the others side. Oreo follows Bobbi everywhere. If I pick one up, the other stands on my feet(and sometimes nips me) until I put the bun I’m holding down. They must go to the vet together, when Bobbi went to get blood work done(she is healthy, don’t worry) I took her to the specialist two-three hours away and spent the night. My husband said that Oreo screamed and shook like he was being attacked. Out neighbors came to check it out! Then he wouldn’t eat, and husband had to drive up to the specialist as well, to keep Bobbi and Oreo together. He was very annoyed after that. ? It’s all good now though, he loves Bobbi and Oreo! When Kiwi was dehydrated, he took shifts with me to watch him. That’s the deal, I’m allowed to have my crazy pets(and no kids) he is allowed to keep his smelly hockey gear in the garage. Otherwise it would be outside?
What a lovely family reunion!
That brought tears to my eyes. I’m so happy for this little bun family!
Name… name… Your description made me think of rocky road ice cream – so Rocky or Smore? lol
Yes. I love food. ![]()
Aww so cute,. I am glad you put your foot down to that brat and her family. These rabbits are so lucky to be saved by such cruel people. I honestly think you should keep “Thumper”, Millie and Kiwi.
Smore is perfect! Maybe smores? I have to think about it. I decided to introduce Kiwi to Bobbi. Not Oreo, he is far to big to be introduced to a tiny helpless Kiwi. I know that both Bobbi and Kiwi are healthy, so I held Kiwi, while Bobbi was able to sniff her. I held her the whole time, I don’t want Kiwi to get run over obviously. Bobbi was very interested, and immediately began licking Kiwi. It was pretty cute. I’m happy Kiwi was introduced to her auntie Bobbi! It’s important to me for Kiwi to be very socialized from early on. She/he has only been introduced to healthy rabbits, obviously I won’t introduce her to my gopher snake, shoelace, or any other animals for that matter. Just Bobbi, Molly and Smores, and myself, my friend, my husband, Darla( I didn’t let her hold Kiwi) and my parents. No one can believe the size of Kiwi. She is a dwarf baby, very tiny. Though she/he has almost doubled in size! I love Kiwis tiny ears! They are SO small compared to both Kiwis littermates and my other rabbits. Kiwi hates her litter mates for some reason. I put her her the nest box, and within 10 minutes, she is at the edge of the box making a crying sound. She seems happier in the kritter keeper, not to mention warmer, so I’ll keep her there.
I think it was serendipity that Molly found you just before she kindled. Can you imagine if those people had the kits and poor little Kiwi was abandoned? You were meant to be their mama! (or grand-bunny mama)
I’ve been following your story and you’re so inspiring! Great job will all the bun saving!
That would have been awful. If Molly hadn’t escaped her hutch, she would have kindled at Darla’s house. If Darla hadn’t murdered the kits, they would have either frozen or starved to death. Yikes! I’m so happy she came to live with me. Even when I took Kiwi to the vet, they said Kiwi would slowly starve to death and they should just euthanize Kiwi. I even thought about that! Now she/he is alive and well, if I had chosen to euthanize Kiwi, I don’t know what I would do with myself! I’m glad I didn’t, thats for sure. He/she is my grandchild! I love Kiwi! Same with all of my pets. I started with one rabbit, but in the past 12 months, I have gained 11 rabbits! Of course, I’m keeping five, but even five is a lot of rabbits. It was like this with hamsters too. The shelter was going to euthanize them due to lack of space and foster homes, so I took every single hamster home. I now have ten foster hamsters, and four of my own. I love animals too much!
Wow! How big is your place? I’m so impressed.
Darla even sounds like an evil spoiled child. I hope they don’t get another rabbit after all this.
And yay for Kiwi! A little miracle.
I have a pretty big house, I own 18 ikea detolfs + kallaxs as stands for the hamsters. All of my pets are listed on my profile? I have quite a few. My hamster count is definitely out of date, my foster hams are always coming and going! My rescue just drops the hams off at my house, I have extra cages (xmas tree bin cages) in case I have more then 18 hams. Once I had 36! Someones hamster had babies, then the babies reproduced because they kept them together. My house is pretty full of pets, I have a six bedroom house, as I have no kids, most rooms are full of pets. Only the guest room was open for Molly and her kits! Thankfully there was a room at all! My friend had to sleep on the couch while she stayed at my place! I love animals! I have way to many right now. I constantly go to the rescue to see if there are animals that need fostering. Then I become attached to the animals I foster and end up keeping them. I’m not a hoarder, I just don’t want the animals to be put down! I don’t usually have dogs or cats because they find homes pretty quickly. Just the weird animals no one except me really wants.
