Mummy was cleaning my cage, she put everything in my playpen, my playpen is attached to my cage, Mummy took my water bowl to clean it, I was growling, she was kneeling down and I bit her knee, Mummy went to get my bowl and filled it with water, stroked me and asked me for a kiss, but Mummy thinks I’m angry because she cleaned my cage and I didn’t give her a kiss, she knows she doesn’t get a kiss every time, I ran to my clean litter tray and Mummy left me, she did not tell me off but she isn’t in my pen now, Mummy has ignored the bite, has Mummy done the right thing by leaving me?

My bunny bites me when I clean his cage, too, but that’s only because he’s not neutered. Now I close the room door whenever I clean his cage. When he does bite me, I pick him up and say “No!” very firmly. It has no effect.

I don’t know if there would be any difference if I didn’t scold him. Maybe you should try spraying your rabbit with water. I’ve heard that works – but I don’t have a spray bottle, so I can’t! Plus, I wouldn’t have the heart to spray my little bunny. He can get so sulky, and even though it’s funny, it’s not very fun to have a sulky bunny!

I have been told to let out a little high pitched scream like “eeee!!!” when my bunny bites or nibbles as if he has hurt me (usually when I’m in his way and I didn’t respond to his nose bonk fast enough). He looks at me seriously when I do this and then gives me a little nudge or kiss to say sorry(at least that’s what I think he’s doing) and then he doesn’t bite again.

I also have been told that disciplining a rabbit like a dog is NOT the way to go. They don’t react the same way. I think you did fine, Pinky. You have to clean his cage, just keep him separate when you do it. and then when you let him back in maybe give him a little treat to thank him for allowing you do clean. If he gets upset, just leave him be until he calms down. I doubt it will last very long.
