A little lady rabbit was hanging out at my husband’s work. After a few days she was still there so he tried to feed her some lettuce. When she didn’t eat, he brought her home and to the vet. The vet said she had ringworm and that with a good diet of hay her diarrhea would resolve itself. We’ve since also found about 15 ticks and a couple of fleas on her. But she hasn’t eaten or drunk much. She’s nibbled on some hay dust (what falls out of the bin onto the floor) and will take a sip or two of water if we put it in a bowl, but she ultimately just tips the water over usually after using it to wash her front feet and face. I tried to force feed her hay, pellets, and celery leaves, but she spat them all out. Is her little bit of nibbling enough to keep her GI tract working? Is there anything else we can do short of waiting the 12-24 hours before taking her back to the vet? She is still popping regularly, although it has been almost entirely diarrhea with only one or two semi-solid pieces since yesterday. The vet didn’t seem too concerned and I’m sure she’s not eating out of stress, but if only for my sanity I need her to eat so she’ll start to feel better.

          Hi Amanda
          Thanks for taking her in.

Diarrhoea in rabbits is watery. Is it like that or just mushy, sticky poo?
If the watery kind, she really should see the vet again.

If it’s just mushy, sticky poop, I would try cutting up the hay or getting the fine stuff from the bag or bale and pop that in a bowl for her. I’d even mix some rolled oats (dry) in with the finer hay.

This *may* help with the poop but more importantly, should hopefully get her eating and avoid gut stasis.

She may have intestinal parasites (like coccidia) along with the other. She’d have to have a fecal test to confirm this.
For fleas, she can be treated with Revolution. This will take care any fur mite also. Im not sure what you’d use for ticks. Don’t use Frontline/fipronil. Maybe just taking them off is enough?

There’s a possibility she has some teeth problems if she’s only going for the hay dust. Dental issues can cause mushy poop also.

Poor little thing. Good luck and I hope you get her eating soon.

A couple other quick question! Did the vet treat her with anything for the ringworm?
Did he check her nipples to see if she’s lactating?

Thank you so very much for your helpful and thoughtful reply. Unfortunately, she passed before I got to even finish reading your answers. We tried our hardest, but she is no longer suffering. Thank you for your time and attention!

Oh I’m sorry to hear this.

It means so much that you and your husband tried. I can’t help but think she was out there because someone didn’t care for her properly, or worse, deliberately released her.

At least she had some caring humans around her before she passed. *Binky free little one*
