I would avoid buying pellets in bulk. Most feed stores, from my experience, sell lower quality pellets that are used for farm stock bunnies, meant to fatten them up for a short life span. Lower quality pellets would worry me because they are probably more likely to contain mycotoxins (from mold) which can be very damaging, even fatal to bunnies. Like I mentioned, this is just the type of pellets I see in the farm feed stores where I buy my horse’s grain. I use Oxbow for my buns. The quality is worth the extra $ in my opinion.

There are people here that buy hay at feed stores. I think the quality of the hay would vary from store to store but any good horse quality grass hay is suitable for bunnies. Just make sure it is dry and doesn’t smell moldy or dusty.

Well here, only feed stores sell Oxbow and Sherwood, so I would say they are better than say Petco, no offense to Petco. They also sell fresh hay bales.

If you mean bulk pellets as in a very large bag, I see no issue. If you mean in a bin, I’m not sure what kind of quality would be found that way.

I’ve started buying my hay at a local feed store. It’s higher quality than the pet stores, much less processed and way cheaper. Even with two rabbits, following the vet’s instructions, I don’t go through enough pellets to bother with buying in bulk.

If the hay is horse hay, it is safe. Horses can only tolerate the very best quality hay.
