I have a 5 year old Holland Lop that I’ve had his whole life. He has always had a problem with producing a lot of cecotropes. This caused a big mess in his cage and I was having to give him frequent baths because his fur would get matted from them. The problem continued to get worse, so I did some research and switched him from a pet store food to Sherwood adult rabbit food. It’s pretty much hay pellets, soy-free and grain-free. He’s doing excellent on it, much more energetic and no more excess smelly cecotropes on him or his cage. I made sure to adjust him to it slowly over a week and a half span and he eats it well. One thing I have noticed that has me a little concerned is how much he’s drinking. Normally, a 32oz water bottle would last him a week. Now he seems to be drinking a TON. The bottle is leaking a little, but I filled it up Sunday morning and by today (Tuesday afternoon) it was almost empty. He will drink for several minutes at a time, and then pee 2-3 times in about a 30 minute span, then drink more. He is acting normal (even more energetic and happier than when on the other food), and his poop is normal. I read that it could be due to the amount of salt in the food, and that would make sense since I just switched him to a new food and that’s when this started. I just wanted to ask around and see if there were any other opinions, or anything I should be looking out for.

I had one experience with a rabbit where she drank 72oz of water a day (I measured it), and I found her huddled in clear pee in a corner. I took her in for medical attention, so I think something like that needs a vets expertise. My rabbits drink way more in the summer, and when I had one, he would drink at least a large dog bowl full of water, daily (he lives indoors). If it’s hotter where you are, that may explain some of it.

It could definitely be the salt in the food. My holland lop drinks a ton! We found out that our apartment is a little too warm for him in the winter so that makes him drink more. We also had some hay that had salt on it as farmers do that to keep it from molding. The extra salt definitely made him drink even more water.
