I have two Holland lop eared rabbits that are brother and sister from the same litter. They just turned 11 months old the other day. I had them living in two separate hutches in my home where they could interact safely (without any accidental kits). I had them spayed and neutered at a veterinarian near me two weeks ago. They both were doing perfectly fine until today I came home to find the male bunny lying dead in his hutch. He had plenty of pellets, hay, and water, toys, space to stretch out, a clean litter box. He was so young and the vet told me he was healthy when he went in for surgery. I am absolutely beside myself right now. I’m going to be calling the vet tomorrow of course being that they’re not open at this hour.  I’m very confused what could have happened and sad and worried for my other bun (the female). Any advice, thoughts, or help with this issue would be much appreciated. Has anyone else gone through this? Does anyone know any possible causes? What extra precautions should I take with my female now?

It’s impossible for us to guess the cause of death, being so sudden and without symptoms makes it even harder for us to do so. The only way to know for sure is to have an autopsy done.

I’m very sorry for your loss.

Just the unexpectedness an no symptoms is the worst. I keep thinking if I had seen he was sick I could have maybe helped him I looked into autopsies and have found that it’s best to do them soon after the death so I don’t think I will be able to do that. Thank you for your sympathy

I don’t have any response to shed light on the situation. But I do want to say I feel for you. It’s horrible to loose someone that fast, without any idea anything was wrong and so young.

This is so sad. I’m very sorry that you lost your boy so suddenly. You had the rabbit fixed at a rabbit vet, correct? I don’t have experience with anything like this, but I hope your girl is doing okay.

Sorry about your bunny, there really is no way of telling what happened without an autopsy.

I’m so very sorry…that must have been so hard.

We hear of this happening more often with rabbits because they are prey animals and are very skilled at hiding their symptoms. In the wild, they need to hide their illnesses so predators won’t pick them out due to being weak. Our domestic bunnies still mimic this behavior sometimes. It’s normal to feel guilty but if you had no way to know he was sick, there is nothing you could have done.

Thank you all for your insight and kind words. It means a lot and has definitely helped! Yes, I did take them to a rabbit vet to get them spayed/neutered, Love4Bunny
