Hey guys! Im new to this forum and have just recently become a mother of two 7 weeks old American fuzzy lop sisters who have had absolutely no type of litter box training whatsoever! Lol! They used to live in just a typical cage back on the farm with a mesh floor where the poop would just fall through so no need to actually pick a spot! However here they have a giant NIC cage with a fleece flooring and towels underneath the fleece (for accidents) a litter box and proper set up but still don’t pick a spot…Its starting to drive me nuts seeing the poop everywhere lol! I clean their floor twice a day and put some of their poop in the litter box so they somewhat know what its for. Their litter box has two inches of wood pellets and hay on top with a hay rack right above the litter box. They hop in and out of it and even lay in it and actually use it from time to time but still pee out of their box here and there but are better about the pee vs. poo. Now my question is…is there anything I can do to improve putting them on the right track? Or is it just a wait and see if they pick it up? I know they are really young and will fluctuate on being consistent until they get spayed but might as well start early and maybe get lucky on them getting the hang of it! Any advice helps!

Just a warning to see a vet very soon to ensure the ladies are indeed both ladies! It happens so much that people just find a litter one day….

What’s the flooring made of? If it’s the coroplast (sign board) I’d remove the fleece. Absorbent flooring encourages them to go to the bathroom. A floor that is not absorbent will encourage them to find the toilet. Also decreasing the area they have-if they are too far from a bathroom or feel the need to mark their territory you are going to have accidents.

You want to practice the good litter habits, but they won’t be super good until after their spay-you may notice they do OK and then not as they get into teenage hood-they’ll improve after the spay.

If you can, I would also suggest removing the soft fleece flooring for now, at least until they are trained. It will make things easier because you’ll be able to wipe up pee accidents with a paper towel, and then put the paper towel in the litter box which acts as a reminder. They are still very young, so it may yet take some time before they get the hang of it.

But like has been said, they may not be the best at it until after they are spayed, you’ll definitely see improvements though.
