So recently I gave my bunny, Orla, a flea treatment that I received from the vet. I was told that it was safe but I’m not so sure it was. She seemed upset to have the treatment on her, but she was slightly acting different since I had brought her to the vet (I adopted her from a friend and I’m not too sure that she’s ever been). She stopped eating her pellets and hay and barely touched the apple slices I gave her. The only thing I’ve been able to get her to eat is some lettuce but she also doesn’t go through as much water as she use to. The vet said her molars were a little pointy so she should get them shaved and I’m going to a different vet soon to get a second opinion so I was thinking that could be why she hasn’t touched her pellets? I’m not sure why she stopped so abruptly though. Her activity has been normal when she’s out and about but she’s not doing much in her cage anymore either. And today when she was out she went to the bathroom on the floor (she’s been in that habit for a little while) but I noticed it’s nowhere near normal. It was a little runny and had gel in it. I read some other replies to similar concerns and that led me to believe it was mucous but I’m not sure. It’s been a few days and I’ve been trying to get her to eat but I’ve become more worried the longer she is this way. Like I said I’m returning to the vet soon but not soon enough because I’m scared that she’s ill and I don’t want it to turn out worst than I could imagine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Exactly how long ago were you given these meds? How many times and how recently have you given them to your bunny? Do you know the name of the medication?

There are flea medications that are dangerous to bunnies (e.g. frontline), however the symptoms usually present more severely in a shorter period of time. My guess is that she is experiencing an adverse reaction to a normally bunny-safe med, or her symptoms are unrelated. Is your vet an exotic vet? Since she has had variation in eating and pooping habits, taking her to an exotics vet asap would probably be the best course of action. Bringing the meds along may help the vet determine if they are the issue.

The vet I took her to that gave me the treatment was not an exotic vet but I am making an appointment with one on Monday. The brand was advantage II by Bayer and I’ve only given her one dose 4 days ago. She started eating her pellets this morning so I took that as a good sign, but I’m not so sure she’s had much hay. I don’t know how soon the vet will be able to make an appointment and I wanted to know if she’ll be okay for a little while and if there’s much I can do at home? Thanks so much ?
