I’m very sorry about the loss of your bunny. It sounds like she had GI stasis. It is called the silent killer. It can come on suddenly and most of the time it is caught early enough so that treatment can be started. But rabbits can hide their illnesses well and sometimes there is no warning and no time for any treatment. Without an autopsy, you can never be entirely certain of what caused the death of your rabbit, but the grinding noises were an indication of pain and the gurgling noises were an indication of stomach issues, so GI stasis was the likely cause.

I’m very sorry that you lost your bunny. As Tobyluv says, it does sound like a GI problem, those can develop very fast in a bunny.

But as i know it GI Stasis takes a few days right? how can she be all happy and cheerful yesterday but all of a sudden die today i even fed her some apple and everything the day before so she couldnt starve and lose all the fat, thats what i wanna know why did she lose all her fat on the stomach… also bunnies dont eat when they’re in pain or dying… she was grinding her teeth, i gave her food, she took a bite and then started the gurgling noises and she stopped eating and started hopping around clearly disturbed and thats when i picked her up and felt no fat on her stomach…

I do agree it’s very weird that she’d lost the fat on her belly.

I hope someone else here can shed some light on this.

The gurgling generally means gas, but that makes a bunny’s tummy hard and round.

Again I’m so sorry that you lost her.

My dad thinks its a genetic mutation and thats what caused it… cuz gi stasis would show itself earlier, not be all happy, eat and drink yesterday and all of a sudden die today… he said shes not a pure breed or any other common breed of bunnies, shes a mix of some races that i have no clue what their name is… and it might have been a $*&! up in the DNA + the weird tummy weight loss thing… surely its not pure GI Stasis, has some symptoms but not all…

I don’t have any answer as to why she lost the fat in her stomach, but stasis can come on suddenly. Rabbits can be eating fine one day, then in stasis the next day.

I’m so very sorry. All I can say is that bunnies can act fine even if they are unwell. They are prey animals and as such have learned to mask their illnesses very well. This can be hard for us bunny parents. I too have been through this. My little 5 month old bunny was fine in the morning and in the afternoon, he passed away before I could get him to a vet.

The only way to determine for sure what happened to your bunny is to have the vet perform a necropsy.

So sorry about bunny this happened to my first rabbit. It can be just hours.

Probably fat loss went on from poor digestion for quite some time.

When I got my first bunny’s sister she had similar problems. She has almost died three or four times. The grinding is their teeth and means pain.

For you next bunny avoid all sugary foods like fruit and carrots. Now she just gets hay and greens. And always keep bunny GI stasis melds around–meloxicam, baby gas drops and a GI stimulant.

Oh and don’t forget to find another bunny, there is one out there in need for you. You keep a little of your bunny who passed away alive every time you rescue another.

                        Again sorry about this.
