I agree that our bunnies can sense how we feel about them. They are extremely intuitive when it comes to feelings. This might be a good opportunity to experiment with “free” toys. Empty toilet roll holders stuffed with hay (or even just as they are), cardboard boxes from packages – with 2 holes cut in them, and maybe even brown paper packaging stuffed inside for them to shred. If you don’t have boxes lying around the house, you could ask at a local grocery store – or any store for that matter. Branches to chew from safe trees in your yard, telephone directories to shred. With a good box supply – you could build quite the bunny mansion. For treats, like bam said, a slice of banana, apple, or other favorite fruit. You could use the bits of hay at the bottom of the bag and bake your own bunny treats. I tried using long hay, it really does need to be the tiny bits at the bottom of the bag. There are recipes on this forum you could search for, or do a google search. Typical ingredients are hay bits, pellets, banana. sometimes honey, and sometimes oats.
I always try to find cheap/free treat/toy options, since they are expensive to buy. I do spend a fair amount of money on accommodation and flooring, but I go for the cheapest toy options, since they destroy them anyway. I’m sure there are even more examples. Try doing a google search for “how to make toys for my rabbit”. I’m sure you will find all sorts of creative inexpensive/free ideas.
Perhaps instead of new toys every week, how about a collection of toys, and rotate them out every week? So that for example – week 1, this set of toys. Week 2, the next set, week 3 the next set, week 4 the next set, and then back to week 1 again. You could also rearrange their living area every week. That provides stimulus as well. It sounds simple, but it really is effective. Everytime I rearrange my bunnie’s room, it’s like a whole new room to them, and they explore like it is something completely new and exiting.
