You don’t have to give them alfalfa hay. A lot of vets/people recommend it to young rabbits because it is higher in calcium/protein. It’s ideal for growing buns because they grow at such high rates. It isn’t a grass hay so if you want to give alfalfa I would give grass hay along with alfalfa. (Alfalfa is made from Lucerne not grass) There are conflicting information on when you should give/stop alfalfa hay too. Many vets suggest baby-1 years of age where as many others suggest young-6/7 months. It is not good for adult rabbits though so starting it or not is completely up to you. Alfalfa is like crack to bunnies too lol. My bunny picks out all the alfalfa first then she eats her grass hay and only if I don’t refill her alfalfa. For a while she was snubbing grass hays…. so keep in mind that if your bunny starts only wanting alfalfa hay you gotta start the process of weening her/him off of alfalfa.

If you feed them good quality junior pellets, that will do fine. It is so great to get them started on grass hay as young buns, you always want a bun to eat lots of grass hay!
