Hello:
My girlfriend and I have two bunnies – Hunny and Stewart. Hunny is a 4 year old female mini rex and Stewart is a 4 month old male Holland lop. Hunny has been fixed recently; however, Stewart has not (looking to do this relatively soon). We have been trying to bond the two for about a month now. They have separate cages in their play pen – one on each side. We were letting them out to play together approx. 30 mins where Hunny would mount and try to claim dominance. After a few weeks of this the behavior stopped. Recently we had them out and they actually became friends. Stewart would reluctantly groom Hunny for a few moments before he would run off and play. We have a little box in the play pen with a towel for them to lay on and we caught them snuggled together in there. We left there cages open and allowed them to roam for approx 48 hours and all went swimmingly; however, this morning I was woken at 7am to bunny claws skittering across laminate flooring. When I checked there pen they were furiously chasing each other in a circle and biting/pulling out tufts of each others hair. Since then, they have not been on good terms.
My question is this: When bonding your two buns, have any of you had a relationship take a 180 degree turn in what seemed to be a few moments? They have gone from cute new friends to agitated scrappers.
If you have any advice on how I can help them correct this behavior, please let me know.
Thanks,
A concerned bunny daddy.
