While there is no way to tell for sure if this is a result of his abandonment in the past, it could very well just be his personality. Some bunnies are more people-friendly than others. My current two bunnies sound pretty much like yours. They spend most of their out-time (they are not bonded and take turns with hanging out in the living room) is spent just doing their own thing. They both love attention (especially my lop Bindi, who is a total teddy bear) but they don’t usually come to me to demand attention. If I go over to where they are hanging out, they will let me pet them and usually enjoy it but it has to be on their terms.

My Bridge bunny, Stormy, who passed away 3 years ago, was way more of a people-bun. He was really bonded to me and would come over to spend time with me. He would even climb on me and ride around on my back.

So, it’s quite possible that your bun has a more aloof personality. My advice is to accept and love him for who he is.

I have a bun who was aloof for a year. Then he started coming out of his shell. Now you might say he’s left his shell far behind him. He really enjoys being pet and he will seek people out to get pet.

As LPT says, buns have different personalities. Some are slow adapters, like my Bam. It took him 2,5 years to figure out how his treat-ball works. But it’s very interesting, he seems to be continously evolving, so to speak. Just recently, this last fall, he’s accepted to be sat in my lap and pet. He falls asleep there even.
