Hi I have a two year old female rex rabbit. She started shedding earlier this week. Its not coming out in clumps just fur everywhere. However I just wanted to be sure. I remember she did shed like this in the summer and then it randomly stopped. It hasn’t happened in a while. I notice that her fur along her back is dense and the fur on her side and tooshie is shiny thats where the shedding i coming from. The dense fur she is not shedding but the shiny fur is. Its not a bunch at at time its just fur everywhere but no  clumps. She is not acting abnormal she is eating, drinking, and going boomboom(poop) normal. She is out playing now like normal doing bunny 500 and binkying. she is not in any bad moods shes still friendly and loving as always . She absolutely loves being brushed. she will lay down beside me and gently chatter her teeth and if i stop she nudges me or does a gentle nip( usually how she gets my attention). She isnt losing or gaining any weight. She is due for her check up and nail clipping. Now that she is two the vet suggest if im not going to breed her to get he fixed. However I am very afraid because my previous bunny was a male who got sick and I had to give him medicine for pain and he died. I dont want her to get sick like that to this day we still dont know what pepper got r.i.p. So is all this normal for the shedding? and is it truly a necessity to get her spay. I dont want her to lose her attitude she is spunky and so playful but at time I want he rsafe and healthy. attached is one of her latest pictures. I am also wondering if she is supposed to have 2 dewlaps on her neck. She is actually not that fit her fur is very thick and alot deeper in length than she looks.

Your bunny is super gorgeous. I love love love Rexes.

That shedding sounds perfectly normal. Bunnies shed differently. Some blow their coat (which may or may not come out in chunks) several times a year while some just sort of shed all year round. My Mini-Rex used to shed somewhat all year as well as blow his coat several times which would result in insane amounts of fur coming out. In my experience, the best tool to use for that plush Rex fur is the Small Animal Furminator followed by petting with damp hands. Make sure to groom every day during a shed.

As far as I know, there is no illness (other than a skin condition) that would cause a bunny to lose fur.

It is highly recommended to spay your female bun. Intact females have a very high risk of reproductive cancers. Something like 80% chance. Make sure you have a rabbit savvy vet and she will most likely make out just fine. There is always a risk with anesthetic but the risk of cancer far outweighs that.

It’s pretty common to have a bunny pass away from an unknown cause. Bunnies are very excellent at hiding their illnesses and will sometimes only exhibit symptoms after it’s too late. Your best bet to keep your bunny safe and healthy is to find an experienced rabbit vet and build a relationship with him/her.

Dewlaps are very common in unspayed females and Rex’s tend to be particularly prone to extra large dewlaps. Having her spayed will most likely reduce the size of it. And I would not be concerned about spaying changing her attitude. I’ve had 2 girl buns spayed and didn’t notice any change in attitude or personality at all.
