I am trying to make a guess at Happy’s breed, and I am having trouble. I have been reading about the different breeds, but it’s hard to tell. If anyone has a suggestion for the best site to help me figure it out, let me know. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get a picture to post. She is a pretty big girl, the same size as my small cat. when I look at pictures of the different breeds, she looks like a chinchilla rabbit, but with shades of brown instead of shades of grey. She has a little white “mustache” under her nose, and tiny thin white lines around her cheeks. Her toes are also white. She has very dark brown on the edges of her ears, and on the top of her tail. Her fur is smooth, and flat to her body, accept one tiny little line of fur, about 3/4 of the way down the middle of her back to tail. She has two small patches of darker fur, one over each shoulder. The reason I compare her to the chinchilla rabbit, is that her guard hairs have more than one shade of brown on each individual hair. She has upright ears, that I would say are medium in length. She has a puffy appearance in the front of her body, around her neck. I’m not really sure how to describe that right. Her soft under coat looks grey. She has big brown eyes. If anyone has any ideas on what kind of breed she could be, let me know, and I will look it up, and try to compare. She sure is a cutie! I just love my gorgeous new girl.
Thanks for reading. Wish me luck in my search.
I think I figured out her color at least! I think she is a chestnut agouti, but I believe this is just a color, and not an actual breed…I’m trying to figure it out. From what I read, she has all the markings of chestnut agouti, including the orange triangle between the shoulders. ![]()
It could be that Happy is a mixed breed, but if you are able to post a picture here, someone might have suggestions about her breed. It is recommended that you upload your photos to Photobucket, then transfer them here.
Sounds like agouti to me. But agouti coloring can be found in many breeds. It’s also the coloring to wild rabbits. How are you trying to attach the pictures? Through the upload function? If they are larger than 500kb, they won’t attach. You have to size them down. Or like Tobyluv said, use Photobucket.

I think it must just be that I’m using my phone. I have tried 3 sharing sites now, including photobucket, and none of them have worked. I can’t upload directly either, even if I were to resize, as my phone just says the plug in is not supported. If I post a direct link, does that mean people could at least click on it and see the picture?

ere is a direct link, in case that at least works. ![]()
I got them! =)
OMG, look at that dewlap!
Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for fixing them! Isn’t she precious? Is a dewlap the puffy part under her neck I was trying to describe? Could that be another sign of what breed she is? It doesn’t seem like all rabbits have that.
She’s beautiful!!!! I’m guessing she’s at least part Flemish Giant judging by her size and her head and ears.
A dewlap is most often found on female buns that are unspayed but overweight buns can get them too.
Happy is beautiful! She certainly isn’t a Dutch rabbit, which is what the farmer told your son, that you mentioned in your other thread. I agree that she could be at least part Flemish Giant. Except for the brown, her coloration is also a lot like a Chinchilla rabbit, which you already found. They are also large rabbits.
Not sure of the breed.. I learn more about breeds every day and I still feel like I know nothing!
You could have a lovely mutt-bunny on your hands.
There are some breeds that are not recognized show breeds, as I recently found out, so it could take some digging… If she’s got a cotton-tail, creamy belly, and red patch on the back of her neck (on shoulders and behind ears) she could be a Tennessee redback or mix of it (they are farm type bunnies raised for meat and for training hunting dogs… our Duncan is a perfect example) The agouti color is staple for them, too… with brown black white and gray shades all on a single strand…
Flemmy mixes and new Zealand mixes seem to be popular for farm bunnies, too, I’ve found.
Whatever she is, she’s adorable. ![]()
That dewlap! I’d say she definitely has some Flemish in her, just because of the skull and eye shape. But her coloring is a bit off for a Flemish, unless a grep, blue and black got mixed together.
Either way she is a pretty lady! What body type does she have? That can be an important indicator for identifying her breed!

Could be some new zealand in there. I agree though, definitely a bigger breed or bigger breed mix.

I took a look at that chart. It is kind of hard to tell, because whenever I’m around her, Happy is either bouncing around and playing, or flopped over on her side relaxing. I want to say she’s in between semi-arch and commercial. I think it’s very likely she’s a mix, so maybe her body type really could be in the middle of two types. Or perhaps I just need to look at more photos of bunnies with each bost type, and learn how to more accurately identify which is which. Lol
Thanks everyone! The main reason I wanted to try to figure out her breed, or mix of breeds, is just to read up about them, and learn more about possible traits that Happy might have. Now today I have someplace to start, and I think I will start with reading about the Flemish Giant, and go from there. I am especially interested to find out if they are known to be a more affectionate breed. From what reading I have done already about rabbits in general, I am thinking I really hit the jackpot with Happy. She has been affectionate with me from day one, and continues to get more affectionate every day. She loves being petted, licks me all the time, comes when I call her, and even jumps into my lap! She lets me kiss her face, and lets the kids pet her, and although she doesn’t like it, she tolerates being picked up and held pretty well. She is also doing pretty well with litter training. She has only had one pee accident, and although she leaves droppings outside the box, she leaves more of them inside her boxes. I am a very lucky rabbit mom!
In general, the larger breeds tend to be more cuddly and lazy. The little breeds are usually more hyper and less cuddly. Sounds like you a got a real little doll! ![]()
Extra cute. My spayed female is overweight and has a largess dewlap… Really cute bunny you have.
All i know about my bunny is it is dwarf
I know my bunny is a dwarf she is very hyper and more of a deer head like face
