Hey guys, my rabbit thumper around 2 months ago was taken to the vet when we found that he has a bald patch underneath his neck… we were given antibiotics at the time because the vet said it looks inflamed! She said it could be mites causing the biting as the skin is irritated, we were then given mite drops and we were giving him the antibiotics as guided. He then stopped eating fully and soon as we noticed we took him to an emergency vet, she said that his digestive system stopped moving so she gave him an injection to get his appetite back and she said only a miracle could start him eating again….. a week later after feeding him through syringe he started eating again which was amazing news, it looked like he ate soo much hair off his neck it blocked his insides up. Since then he has fully recovered and his hair on his neck started growing back, but now he is starting to eat all his neck hair again!!! But the good thing is that he is still eating and drinking.
Does anyone know what can cause him to eat his neck hair? He is excessively biting it, linking and scratching a bit? He is being himself still..
In his cwtch where he sleeps every night we have a blanket in there which is washed every now and again, and he does Sit on the windowsill with a blanket also when the sun is out, could this be a cause for skin irritation? Due to the washing powder?
He is a house rabbit toilet trained and he is always free roaming around the house with his own bedroom.
Any ideas will be deeply appreciated because we want to get to the bottom of this as we are concerned about his wellbeing and of course to stop him pulling out his lush thick coat!
I have attached a photo below of the patch under his neck..
Thanks all!
