Is it okay to put my bun on a hay only diet for a few days (she eats a lot of Orchard)? She’s 9 months at the moment and has been eating a low amount of pellets and a cup of green veggies at night along with unlimited hay. I am trying to make her poop brown again.

Dark colored poos aren’t necessarily a bad thing. They are generally a sign of a diet rich in protein. What type of pellets are you feeding?

I give her a really small amount of Oxbow Young pellets. Literally like 15 pieces a day.

My buns have darker poos when they are eating darker coloured hay. When they eat lighter, timothy hay, the poos are light brown. It’s nothing to worry about. It’s the size, shape and firmness of the poos that matters.

Sounds fine – except that Orchard is richer than Timothy, and so Orchard will make the poops darker than Timothy. If you want to lighten the poops – try switching to Timothy hay.

I posted before reading the other posts – I agree with LBJ10 and Little Puffy Tail.
9 months is still young enough to be eating a richer diet, and orchard is not a bad hay. I used Orchard to get Lancelot to eat hay. Now that he does, I want to switch him to Timothy because it is coarser, and Lancelot’s digestive system needs all the help it can get. I definitely notice darker poops with Orchard. Your bunny’s diet sounds quite good though.

Ah… I didn’t know about the whole darker hay = darker poop thing. That makes a lot of sense now. I feed her Orchard because she wastes a lot of Timothy. Welp, back to her normal diet tomorrow then.

                    Thank you everyone!
