So I got my mini rex a little over two weeks ago. The first week or so I didn’t really care, I just kept throwing poop in a box and tried to clean up as much pee as possible. As we headed into week two it was getting a bit more awkward, he still hadn’t even accidentally gone in any of the now two litter boxes I had in the cage. I figured, maybe I gave him too much space at once (he came from a breeder in a small cage, I moved him to a small commercial cage of about 30×18 inches and then a few days later into a NIC cage of about 56×42 inches) so I moved him down to a smaller space of about 42×28 inches.
He apparently sees the litter boxes as awesome beds filled with food. He likes to get in there and mess the hay up and make himself a little nest and cover himself up with hay. Which is why I got the second, smaller litter box in there. I figured one could be the bed and then one could be a place to poop but now he just has two awesome beds.
I’m not expecting anything remotely close to perfect litter habits, he’s only about 10 weeks old, I’d just like to see some kind of evidence that he uses them at all. So far all of the wood stove pellets are in perfect condition, none have turned into that weird lumpy dust and I haven’t seen any evidence of fresh poop on top of the stuff I keep tossing in there. He doesn’t seem to poop in any corner at all, and every time I rotate a box to a new corner, he just keeps on pooping and peeing all over the place.
Is he still crazily marking his territory? I haven’t litter trained a rabbit in nearly seven years, I don’t know if maybe I blocked out all of the horrible memories (I must have blocked a lot of them! I’m digging up old supplies I used when my older rabbits were babies and I forgot how destructive they were as teenagers!) but I could’ve swore my two older guys started at least partially using the box almost right away. It just seems really weird that he doesn’t use it at all, and I really hope he starts to get the idea soon. I can’t really have a rabbit running around my house just peeing wherever he happens to stop, and I’d be heartbroken to have to keep him locked up for most of the day.
