Hi there! On Saturday my partner and I (first time bunny owners) adopted a bonded pair of female Holland Lops that were at the Humane Society. They’re the cutest buns ever, but they’re nervous enough that while I was cleaning their cage, I accidentally cornered the more submissive bun, was in between the two, and her mate (I think being protective) bit my arm.
Lesson learned, of course, and it was my own mistake that got me bitten! Also they’ve been very skittish and haven’t wanted to be touched at all.
My question is, are there any special tips for getting to know and gaining the trust of bonded buns? Except for that one mistake, I think I’ve done fairly well with respecting their space. But they’ve barely come close enough for a curious sniff. I know it’s too early to expect much (moving is stressful for anyone!) but I just want to get off on the right foot with these cuties.

From what I know, aside from what you’ve been doing (respecting their space), you’re supposed to leave them be for a few days while they settle, then just be around them (either talking to them or simply being there), then once they show some curiosity about you, let them come to you and maybe offer a bit of food or healthy treat, then if they become comfortable with your touch, try little pets or head rubs, etc. Basically, let them take the lead in the bunny waltz. Oh, and try to be at their level (i.e., on the floor) as much as possible at first – less intimidating.
