It’s extremely sweet of your dad to say you should vaccinate your rabbit! Give him a hug!
Kokaneeandkahlua is correct though. In Europe, there is a double-vaccine, against myxomatosis and rabbit hemorragic disease. In Australia, there is a vaccine against rabbit hemorragic disease, but the myxomatosis vaccine is not allowed under the law.
Both in Europe and in Australia there are frequent outbreaks among wild rabbits of these two 2 diseases, especially myxomatosis. These diseases were purposely inmplanted as a means to control wild rabbit populations, because rabbits were (and still are very much so in Australia) regarded as vermin.
In North America, the wild rabbits are not of the same species as wild rabbits in Europe and Australia and New Zealand, oryctolagus cuniculus, the same species that our house rabbits belongs to. Your wild rabbits are not as sensitive to these 2 diseases so they won’t cause epidemics in them. You have had outbreaks of the diseases in domestic rabbits, but the diseases are not considered a big enough risk for the vaccines to be recommended. The vaccines are for that reason currently not marketed in North America.
