About a week or so ago I got my 12 week old bunny Luna from a woman whose rabbit had babies. She kept them outside in a hutch, but he seemed healthy and happy so I didn’t think much of it. For the past 24 hours or so Luna has been sneezing constantly. Every 10 minutes he has a little fit of sneezes, some of them sound a bit wheezy. He also coughed a few times as well, it was really weird it sounded like a duck quacking. Now I’ve had a bunny with snuffles in the past, but Luna’s eyes aren’t weepy, they look normal. His nose however was a little wet earlier in the day. He’s eating normally and playing, just having wheezy sneezing fits.
I did clean his cage earlier in the day and added a different type of hay in there. Soon after is when the sneezing started happening, so I took the hay out figuring it might be too dusty and affecting his allergies. But that was about 20 hours ago now, shouldn’t it have died down if that was what was causing it? I took the hay out but did not change the bedding and all that as I had just done that, should I do it again regardless? Maybe soak the cage in warm water? Think there may still be some hay residue in there that’s bothering him? Could it be the start of snuffles? Maybe a parasite since he was living outside with other rabbits? Anything I can do to try eliminating options?
I don’t really want to rush to a vet until I do a bit of process of elimination and see if there’s not anything I can figure out to help him first. The last vet I took my last bunny to that claimed she was experienced with rabbits, gave my bunny amoxicillin to treat the snuffles (I did not know at the time that it could harm them) and then months later when I took him to get neutered she gave him too much anesthesia and it killed him. I’ve found a new and reputable veterinarian on the vet list, but it’s 2 hours away, and I’m sure very expensive, so I’d like to try and see if there’s anything I can do to solve the problem before taking him in, which I will do if it needs to happen because I want my baby healthy.
Any advice would be so appreciated!
UPDATE: I just added some pics of his eyes and nose
